Looking for others experiences with osteosarcoma in cats and their treatment routes. My cat Millie is at least 7-8 years old, fixed, former stray abandoned by my neighbors. She had a biopsy on her tumor and it is osteopsarcoma. The vet is pushing for amputation but I’m worried about it being too far advanced. I don’t have unlimited funds but I would be willing and able to do the amputation if it’s a good route for her
Location: US (Florida)
Issue: Osteosarcoma diagnosis, large tumor left front leg
Cat: Millie, 7ish years, fixed
Hi guys!
My cat had his front left leg amputated when he was only 6 months old. He’s doing great overall, and the amputation was about 5 months ago.
Recently I noticed that the fur at the end of his stump has become thinner/lighter, and he’s developed a couple of small sores. There’s no swelling, no bad smell, and he’s acting completely normal.
I think it might be caused by friction. We recently moved to a small island for work for about six months. There are no cars here, so he spends a lot of time outside, running freely around our property. The ground is mostly rocks and concrete docks, and he loves being by the sea, so I’m wondering if the stump is rubbing against those surfaces.
Unfortunately, there isn’t a veterinarian on the island. I called a few clinics, but they said they can’t really assess the situation over the phone without examining him in person, which isn’t possible for us right now.
Has anyone experienced something similar with an amputee cat? Does this look like friction sores, or could it be something else? Also, is there anything safe I could put on the stump to reduce direct friction so it doesn’t get worse? Maybe some kind of protective sleeve, bandage, or another solution that has worked for your cat?
I’ve attached a photo in the comment section
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
Hi everyone,
My cat Tuxi (5 years old) has been diagnosed with a feline injection-site sarcoma (FISS) on the medial aspect of her right thigh. We did a full staging CT scan with contrast, and the results are:
• Mass approximately 5-6 cm, infiltrative, with central necrosis and high vascularity.
• It contacts the bone (femur and tibia) but no bone invasion.
• No visible metastases in lungs or abdomen.
• Regional lymph nodes normal.
The vets recommend amputation of the right hind limb as the best chance for local control, possibly followed by radiation therapy depending on the margins.
My biggest fear is that even after amputation, the margins won’t be clean or the cancer will recur anyway. I’ve read that even with clean margins there’s still a recurrence risk (around 15-40% in some studies), and metastasis can appear later even if not seen on CT.
She’s only 5 years old and the thought of putting her through amputation just to “buy a little more time” is breaking my heart. I want this to be curative, not just palliative.
I would really appreciate hearing real experiences from people who have gone through this:
• How was the recovery after amputation?
• How long were your cats tumor-free?
• Did you have local recurrence or metastasis?
• Was it worth it in your case?
• Does anyone regret doing it or not doing it?
Any stories (good or bad) would help me a lot with this decision. I know this is a tough topic, but I’m feeling very lost and scared right now.
Thank you so much ❤️

For those that saw my previous post about Ringo, here’s a quick update!
Post-op; he’s extremely high. like, higher than i’ve ever been (probably). Since coming home, he was able to make his way to the litter box with no help from anyone! Of course, we were hovering over him like helicopter parents, but he was up and moving as soon as he got out of his carrier! He has since found a spot as seen in the pictures, but I do not trust it (him, to not flop around like a fish and harm himself further)
that being said, i am literally on my way home from getting a dog crate from my dad to put Ringo in lol.
Ringo is expected to make a wonderful recovery, and I have bought him a plush cone that will be in the mail soon! i forgot who suggested it, but thank you!!
My dads cat was diagnosed with severe Osteochondrodysplasia and we had to amputate her hind leg. She has recovered well, walling is still a challenge but last night she brought a mouse. Her running is pretty impressive though.
I met Joey today and i haven’t stopped thinking about him. He has swimmer syndrome but he’s the sweetest boy. After a little petting, he rolled over and showed me his belly. I really hope someone gives him the loving home he deserves.
He’s at The Charming Cat Corner in Lewisville, TX 75067 🇺🇸 (please come visit him and his friends)

Also, sorry for all the reposts across different subreddits! i realized i might’ve overdone it a bit. Wanted to help him get seen and didn’t mean to come across as spammy!
My lovely lady Lu is two months post-amputation of her rear right leg due to osteosarcoma. She's generally doing great - healthy appetite, loves face scratches (on her terms, lol), and while she's not running around, she's navigating her room and litter boxes well.
My problem is that I can't tell if her right front leg (same side as amputation) is showing signs of swelling in the ankle joint, or if it's an optical illusion as the fur grows back from the surgery shave. Sometimes she holds it in a weird bent position that looks alarming, but then she'll straighten it out and it looks completely normal. I know a visit to the vet would hopefully confirm any problems, but I hate to take her there if it's totally normal, considering the trauma she went thru there just two months ago.
Does anyone else fight with themselves about obsessing over any/every possible change after a big health event like this for their cat?
This is my new baby Trinket. She is eight weeks old and as you can see lacks her front right paw. Her little nub has an elbow joint and approximately two little toe beans. She hops a little when walking and is slightly clumsy in the litter box but is quite capable of getting around :)
I’m hoping someone here has been through something like this and can offer any advice/words of comfort.
We have a 1 month old baby that we just found last week. He had a dead back leg that he was dragging around. After a couple days of back and forth vet visits and a trip to the cat ER, our vet told us it would need amputated.
He is currently too little for surgery and our vet assured us that he would be okay to wait for a few weeks. He’s on painkillers and antibiotics. She did tell us the leg would change color, shrivel, and might even fall off (AHHHHH), etc. and it has changed.… but i find that every time something new happens with the leg im booking another appointment, panicking, calling the emergency clinic, etc.
I won’t post photos of his nasty little foot, but it is black, hard, and shriveled like the described. Every day it seems to change. Peeling, etc.
Has anyone else had to go through this? Waiting for weeks with the injured leg before amputation? Finding a surgeon for a kitten so young?
If you have a success story for a kitten who went through this please share it so I can stop freaking out about this :,).
