Taiwan has a very generous IVF and pregnancy assistance program -- but only if you're married

(EDIT: Married to someone of the opposite sex)

There's some support for egg freezing, but full IVF and the like is only covered for married couples. Seems a bit short-sighted to me. There's got to be many single women in their late-30s or early 40s who would consider this if available to them. Unlike a lot of other places, many single people here have very stable home and financial situations with ample family help if needed.

And if it's a tax thing, if not provide the full amount, at least half seems fair.

Thoughts?

(Also, I've only recently been made aware of this issue. If anyone knows more or if there's any historical movement on it, I'd like to learn)

Homecoming football tickets?

I live in Taiwan, but I will be in DeKalb in October, and I would love to check out the homecoming game. Back when I lived in town, tickets were really cheap, like you could get a ticket for 10 bucks. I checked it out and I was seeing prices for non students for like $65, which is way more than I feel comfortable paying.

Does anyone know a way for a non-student to get cheap/er tickets?

Thanks!

They are building a 50k seat stadium in Shulin

It was between here and Tamsui, and I think that government made the correct choice. This is a pretty big deal for SW Taipei.

Thoughts?

EDIT: I should have said it's a pretty big deal for SW New Taipei (Shulin and lower Xinzhuang will change dramatically and look unrecognizable in ten years)

Terminal 1 coffee prices are wild!

This is at the L.E.A.F. coffee shop in terminal 1. For reference, a regular Americano was 100 nt.

If you buy this competition lot coffee, however, you're looking at 14,500 per pound!

...but it's discounted to 12,600 😳

I mean, I'd never buy it at anywhere near these prices... But has anyone tried it?

*(It is cool that they are growing good coffee here.)

Anyone try Line premium?

Let me first say that I absolutely hate Line. So many dumb, infuriating, or just nonsensical "features. But unfortunately there's no escaping it for me since I'm in Taiwan and it's how people communicate here.

So I'm thinking, maybe some of these bad aspects of the app are getting fixed in the premium version? They are really pushing this hard lately.

(This kinda happened with YouTube Premium, where they made the app worse to get you to sign up for the better version. Like if I just want to listen to a video without my screen on, I need YT premium. I have it, and it's fine for the most part)

For example, I see something called sub-profiles. Maybe you can use this If you're doing a business or side hustle and don't want to share the same info with strangers.

Or maybe they fix how you won't receive a message from people who send it to you before you become friends... IDK

Anyway, if someone has some experience or a review, let me know your thoughts! thanks!

Thoughts on outdoor market chicken?

Dear Taiwan-based chicken eaters: of those of you who cook, do you generally buy chicken from outdoor markets or from supermarkets? Honestly, it's hard for me to trust the sanitary conditions of the markets, leaving raw chicken outside for hours in the heat. However, obviously many people do this on a daily basis, including my mother-in-law, who seems pretty healthy (and me as well, since I'm occasionally eating her cooking --and probably many of the restaurants I frequent are buying there too).

I've heard it's more about the preparation than the condition at point of sale, but it's still hard for me to get over seeing it just... out there. I always assumed it's fresher and cheaper -- but less sanitary -- from those markets than say from Costco. As an example, there's a place nearby That literally just leaves a whole raw chickens sitting out all day in plastic bags without any cooling. Not going there regardless, but...

Should I get over it and buy chicken from the local market?

NB I don't eat red meat, but I would also assume that it's a similar situation.

https://www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/poststar/name/karen-hess-obituary?id=60906899

Karen Hess, co-founder of one of the biggest buxiban chains in Taiwan, passed away earlier this year.

I don't know much about her besides what I read on Wikipedia and in this obituary, and I never worked for the company. I would assume that she had a big role in the structure and pedagogical model of Hess, and therefore had a big impact on many people's lives in Taiwan --both foreigners and Taiwanese.

My understanding is she founded the company with her partner/husband, but that a lot of expansion came after she stepped away from the company.

Did anybody here know her personally? If you worked for the company, what do they say about her in the training?

In the obituary It says that she likes to take care of animals and travel and go to auctions. I like that.
