Is it possible to update the Fetch XML of a subgrid on a form? I’m seeing conflicting ideas online and not a lot of success from trying.

Basically I have a table with a lookup field to another table. I have a subgrid of a table that has a relationship with that lookup field table, but not the first table. I was hoping to add a filter to show related records based on the lookup field. I suppose I could just add a direct relationship but was hoping to not have to.
