Can I be forced to start earlier if I’m already in the building?

apologises if some sentences seem a bit bad wrote i am heavily dyslexic*

So recently my car broke down and i had to get a train to work, and tbh it was quite enjoyable I brought my iPad and AirPods and studied while waiting and it made me an hour early to work so I sat in the canteen revising for uni

So I kept doing it even after my car was fixed trains only run every hour so it’s like 2:33 to make it there by 2:53 and it’s a 20 minute walk so I will always be an hour early because of this.

I can’t study at home as it’s so loud and noisy and the canteen is normally empty when I go in. My SM approached me last week and she asked if I can start now since I was already in the building I was a bit annoyed but agreed to do it as a one off.

The next day she asks me again, I said no because i don’t start for another hour and she said I have too as I’m already in the building so I said I’m a bit lost as people come in before work and have a cup of tea before they start & she responded It’s different as that’s only about 15 mins and I am taking up space for an hour

I am on one single table & nobody comes in when I’m in there & I said if it’s an issue I can leave and come back in an hour but she said since I’m already there I have to start there and then, can she do this? I’m genuinely curious & a little baffled by this whole thing?

Any advice welcome, thank you :)

EDIT*

I am overwhelmed with the amount of support i appreciate every one of you! To answer some common asked questions

- Yes this was Paid overtime which I still refused I simply didn’t want the hours

- going home an hour earlier is not a option at least for me because I’m on fresh we handle all waste reductions and charity and these need to be done at a specific time (in my store at least unsure about elsewhere)

- I think the reason she lost her head at me was because of not me personally she always claims I do an amazing job but very recently they cut EVERY OVERTIME shift, and even withdraw any overtime people had, they did this for a solid 3 months and people have now either had new second jobs or simply learned to live without out so they are in dire need for staff yet nobody wants the hours
