What's a liquor "rule" you completely ignore?

People always say things like:

  • Never mix good whiskey.
  • Expensive always means better.
  • Ice ruins the drink.
  • Shots are only for cheap liquor.

Is there a common piece of liquor advice that you completely disagree with?

I'd love to hear the unpopular opinions that have actually held up for you.

What's the biggest liquor mistake you made when you first started drinking?

Mine was assuming that a higher price automatically meant a better bottle. I spent way more than I should have on something I barely enjoyed.

Looking back, I probably would have been happier starting with a few solid budget recommendations and figuring out what I actually liked.

What was your biggest beginner mistake? Buying the wrong bottle, mixing the wrong drinks, chasing hype, or something else?

If you could keep only one type of liquor for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?

You have to give up everything else.

Would you stick with whiskey because of the variety, vodka for versatility, rum for cocktails, tequila for sipping, gin for the botanicals, or something else?

I'm interested to see which spirit wins and what made you choose it.

What's one liquor bottle you bought because of the hype but wouldn't buy again?

We've all been there—a bottle that everyone seemed to love, so you picked it up expecting to be impressed.

Maybe it was too expensive for what it offered, maybe the flavor just wasn't for you, or maybe your expectations were simply too high.

What bottle disappointed you the most, and what would you recommend instead?

What's one wine "rule" you completely ignore?

People always talk about pairing red with meat, white with fish, letting bottles breathe, serving at the perfect temperature...

But what's a wine "rule" you've happily broken?

For me, if I enjoy the glass, that's all that really matters. I've had inexpensive bottles that I liked more than some expensive ones.

What's your unpopular wine opinion or habit?

What's one bottle you bought with low expectations that completely surprised you?

I think we've all had that experience where we grab a bottle because it was on sale, recommended by a friend, or simply the only decent option available.

Sometimes it ends up being way better than expected.

What's the biggest pleasant surprise you've had? It could be whiskey, vodka, rum, gin, tequila, or wine. Bonus points if it was under $40.

I'm always looking for underrated bottles to try next. 🍻

What's one bottle you bought with low expectations that completely surprised you?

Mine was a budget bottle I grabbed because it was on sale. I expected it to be a mixer at best, but it ended up becoming one of my regular pours.

What's the bottle that exceeded your expectations the most? Doesn't matter if it's whiskey, bourbon, rum, vodka, tequila, gin, or wine—I'd love to hear your unexpected favorites.

What's one bottle you bought on a whim that completely surprised you?

I usually spend way too much time reading reviews before buying a bottle, but every now and then I'll grab something just because it caught my eye or was on sale.

Sometimes it's a hidden gem, sometimes it's a lesson learned.

What's your best "random purchase" that turned out to be way better than expected? And what made it so good?

What's one bottle you bought because of Reddit that actually lived up to the hype?

We've all seen the same bottles recommended over and over.

Which one did you finally buy because everyone kept talking about it, and it actually exceeded your expectations?

On the flip side, was there a bottle that Reddit loved but you thought was overrated?

I'm always looking for new bottles to try, so I'd love to hear everyone's experiences.

What's one bottle you bought on a whim that completely exceeded your expectations?

I think we've all grabbed a bottle with low expectations—maybe it was on sale, recommended by a stranger, or just looked interesting on the shelf.

Sometimes it ends up becoming a regular in the rotation.

What's one bottle that surprised you the most, and why? It doesn't have to be expensive. Could be whiskey, bourbon, rum, vodka, gin, tequila, or anything else.

I'm always more interested in the "hidden gems" than the bottles everyone already knows about.

What's the biggest mistake you made when you first started drinking red wine?

Mine was assuming every bottle should taste smooth right away. I bought a cheap, super-tannic bottle, drank it straight from the shelf without letting it breathe, and wondered why people enjoyed red wine at all.

A few better recommendations later, I realized how much serving temperature, decanting, and the style of wine can change the experience.

What was your beginner mistake, or what's one thing you wish someone had told you before you got into red wine?

Do you still have a "go-to" beer after trying craft beers?

Even with all the amazing craft options available, I still find myself reaching for a familiar lager now and then. Does anyone else keep coming back to an old favorite?

What's one wine under $25 that completely exceeded your expectations?

I've realized some of the best bottles I've had weren't the expensive ones. If you could recommend just one wine under $25 that consistently punches above its price, what would it be and why?

Do you actually notice tasting notes like "leather" and "tobacco," or do you just enjoy the drink?

I always read tasting notes before opening a bottle, but half the time I just think, "Yep... tastes like whiskey." Curious how everyone else approaches tasting.
