School OT suggestions
Just got a school OT job recently but very new to the setting the environment is very distractable with other students that need support in the classroom as there isn’t a therapy room and quite a few students of difficulty with transitions to different rooms anyway. I would do like to attempt to engage them in heavy work prior to sitting or do movement based activities and then attempt fine motor activities while standing at least but the classroom setting is a tad limited. Have very limited info about the students even when I ask the teachers and previous OT only so much info I can glean from present level and I don’t see their previous IEP goals achieved either or what was worked on really.
Any suggestions on working with nonverbal, autistic kids mod to high support needs who don’t like sitting down, tactile defensiveness, and attending to activities I try engaging them with? Only had 3-4 sessions with some of the kiddos feels like I’m just chasing them down to interact, retrieving and item they’ve thrown, and not being very therapeutic other than building rapport and some fine monitor/hand use.
Also not much experience in nearly blind + deaf peds kids a would like to hear perspective on that discussed with vision therapy some but would like to hear tactics from other ot.
