moving into my new apartment later this week and totally forgot to set up internet, anyone have any recs for getting internet on a yearly/monthly basis?
Background: we're both in college (I'm 20F, he's 20M), have been dating for a year and five months. We met at college through mutual friends, but do long distance during the summer/school breaks as we live on different sides of the country. Last summer, when we did long distance, it was fine. We called almost every night, had great conversations, and watched movies and shows. We're very different people, I'm a humanities major and he's a STEM kid, my mom has been happily married to my stepdad and his parents have a unhappy marriage, I'm an oldest child and he's the youngest, etc, etc. This has caused problems in showing affection before (he is not the type to say "I love you" all the time, while I am), but for the most part, we have spoken and sorted it all out.
This summer, I am working 40 hours a week at the internship of my dreams, and he is working a job in education after not being able to find an internship (very competitive top 15 university). We call every night this summer but it doesn't feel right. He asks me a ton of questions about my day, but when I ask them back, he has short answers and doesn't go into detail like I do. I feel like I'm interrogating him every time we talk. Normally, I feel excited to call him, but recently, I have been dreading it. I hate answering his questions and talking to him seems more like a chore. Our calls used to be around an hour every night, but they've been getting shorter and shorter, even though I normally leave it to him to end the call/conversation. I love him a lot but I have been really thinking about the future of our relationship.
He came to visit me at my internship and it was nice, but certainly not enough time to catch up. We saw each other at a mutual friend's house last month as well, and it left a sour taste in my mouth because I felt like I had to watch him and was worried about him feeling happy rather than spending time with friends. He left early, and I really missed him after that though.
I brought up these concerns a while back, saying that I felt unhappy and wanted to work on our dynamic, and he agreed that things felt off. However, after texting more frequently and having better conversations for a bit, it's back to the same feelings.
I love him a lot, and feel like I should not make any decisions about breaking up or staying together until after we get back to university and re-adjust. This will give us more time to see each other in person, which is especially helpful to me, as my love language is physical touch. The past few weeks, I've been telling myself to "hold on" and just ignore my feelings until we get back in person, but I feel like I can't handle it any more. My internship is ending soon and I will be going home, and I can't stand the idea of having to call him every night instead of spending that valuable time with my family.
Thus, the break. I want to ask to take a break until we get back to campus, but don't know how to. I've done a lot of reading on it the past few days, but want outside opinions.
I want to do this on call (it feels wrong to do it over text) and make him feel like he's getting a say in the rules of our break. However, my basic rules are that I don't want nightly calling anymore, and that we're both still in the relationship (aka: I'm not doing this to cheat or anything). I just can't handle thinking about him. When we get back to campus, I want to have dinner with him the night before school starts (or on the day school starts) and re-start the relationship from there. I think this will give me the space to enjoy my time at home, and hopefully, distance will grow fondness. We don't text often (he's bad at responding, and I haven't been caring enough to be carrying the conversation), but I know I need to put a rule on this form of contact and I don't know what it could be (scheduled times/days to text sounds too rigid and controlling, but I want him to know that he can contact me a bit if he needs).
I feel like this will blindside him a little bit no matter what, but I don't want to hurt him. How can I best phrase this request for a break, and what kind of "rules" can I put on it to let him know that I still love him and am trying to make this relationship work while still taking the time to focus on myself and re-gain my joy and energy for him?
TL;DR: Want to go on a genuine, well-intentioned break with boyfriend, but don't know how to ask him.
