Breakdown

So I got a question for y’all: what do you think the story behind Breakdown really is? Like, who do y’all think she was talking about? We all know the story of how the song came together, but not necessarily who it was about or what she was truly going through emotionally at that time. Because that song is DEEP. I have my little theory lol. I kinda feel like it might be part of the Jeter collection 👀 but overall, it’s just such an incredible song. So personal, sensitive, and painfully relatable. Her songwriting on it is insane. Truly one of her best written songs.

Gen z lamb

Shout out to the Gen Z lambs 😭 I was born in 2006 and fell in love with her music in middle school. I saw a post from another Gen Z lamb talking about discovering her, but she graduated high school in 2018… during the Caution era. Meanwhile, I was literally just entering middle school when she was graduating 😭 It really shows how huge Gen Z actually is, because I’m definitely on the younger side of it.

What’s funny is I always assumed older Gen Z would naturally be more familiar with her music, and maybe they are, but people my age mostly know All I Want for Christmas Is You, Obsessed, and some songs that went viral on TikTok. But for me, she’s genuinely one of my favorite singers of all time, alongside Janet Jackson and Beyoncé.

Caution/HFIA

Okay, I know I’m late to this debate, but to me, Caution is just way better than Here for It All. First of all, it suits her voice way more. On Here for It All, she’s pushing herself vocally in a way she really didn’t need to. It leans a lot more into classic Mariah, and I get why a lot of OG fans love that, but personally it’s not really my thing. I love her older work — Butterfly is one of my favorite albums ever — but I don’t necessarily need her to recreate that sound now.

What I loved about Caution is that she leaned into something more modern and experimental instead of fighting against where her voice is at now. That’s also why I struggled with Me. I Am Mariah… The Elusive Chanteuse at times — she was pushing way too hard vocally. On Caution, she restrained herself more, and honestly it worked in her favor. She turned the texture and limitations of her current voice into part of the atmosphere of the album instead of trying to overpower everything.

And what’s crazy is that even with different producers on almost every track, Caution still feels insanely cohesive. That really shows her artistic vision and how involved she was creatively. With Here for It All, I didn’t really feel that same freshness or cohesion. It’s not a bad album at all — it actually has some really great songs — but to me it just doesn’t feel as interesting or exciting as Caution.

I can also add that the rollout for Caution was way more interesting overall. The interviews, the performances, the whole era just felt more focused and intentional. With Here for It All, I’m sorry, but the rollout felt kind of messy to me. Most of the performances made her seem disconnected or out of it, and the interviews weren’t really giving much either.

What frustrated me is that a lot of the promo leaned more into the whole “diva Mariah” persona instead of actually focusing on her artistry, creativity, or the music itself. During the Caution era, there was way more emphasis on the album, the production, the collaborators, and the direction she was taking musically. I wish they had leaned into that again instead of recycling the same diva antics narrative for the hundredth time. Because at this point, I think her artistry is way more interesting than the caricature people keep pushing onto her.

Also, some of y’all fans — and people in general around her — need to let go of this obsession with her having to be number one all the time. I’m not saying it’s impossible, but realistically, given where she seems to be mentally and professionally right now, it doesn’t even look like she fully wants to play that game anymore. And honestly? That’s okay.

People also need to accept that it’s way harder for women over 40 to consistently hit number one, especially in pop music. Even Beyoncé — who has maintained an almost flawless public image, amazing PR, and consistent critical acclaim for years — hasn’t had a solo number one in a very long time. Most of her recent chart-toppers came through remixes or collaborations. That just shows how much harder it is at that stage of a career, no matter how legendary you are.

And with MC, she already accomplished what most artists could never even dream of. She spent decades dominating the charts, has one of the most iconic catalogs in pop and R&B history, and literally holds records people still struggle to touch. She does not need another number one to validate her legacy.

If it happens, great — I’d be happy for her. But with the current state of her promo, performances, PR, and overall energy, I just don’t think that’s where things are headed right now, and that’s not even shade. I think fans (and herself) put way too much pressure on her to recreate something she already achieved at the highest level for like twenty years straight. That’s insane longevity already. At this point, I’d rather see her focus on making music that actually fits where she is artistically and vocally instead of chasing chart positions she doesn’t need anymore.

Is it the same night/party??😭😭

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think those pictures were taken the same night. And if that’s true, she is so unserious 😭 Like girl… what is actually going on here? I had to sit and stare at the photos for a minute because what the hell is this behavior? She was so messy for absolutely no reason 💀

Unpopular opinion MCxDJ

I think MC and Derek may have continued seeing each other in the early 2000s. I’ve heard a few rumors about it. Obviously nothing public, but it really seems like she couldn’t fully forget him. Some of the songs in Charmbracelet and The Emancipation of Mimi definitely hints to that. For intense, Crybaby, she’s described in her book that it was inspired by Derek, even though she was already with Luis at that point. And she talks about that feeling of still being emotionally connected to an ex while trying to move on. She couldn't sleep at night, y'all. Like, it was that bad. She was reminiscing for real, for real.😭😭😭
But yeah, whatever, it may not be true but I’m just someone who enjoys gossip honestly. I read her book not too long ago, so I went down a little rabbit hole about that whole relationship because I thought it was kind of cute at first. And yeah… it was messy as hell, but it definitely gave us some great songs though.

Whats your favorite?

Okay, random question for y’all lambs 😭
Which one do you prefer between Underneath the Stars, 4th of July, Yours, and Joyride?

I grouped those four together because they all kinda got the same vibe to me. Like, in my head:
Underneath the Stars is part one, 4th of July part two, Yours part three, and Joyride part four 😭 Very Minnie Riperton-inspired, soft, dreamy, sensual type songs.

Personally, I cannot choose. The only thing I know is that Yours would probably be at the bottom for me — no shade at all, it’s still a beautiful song. But the other three? Yeah, impossible to rank 😭

What do y’all think?
