r/MariahCarey

I think the “wrong songs” from Mariah’s debut album took off.

Don’t get me wrong: Mariah’s debut album was perfect and every one of those songs was hit material! However, I believe that there were some certain songs that deserved the title of a “hit” over some of the songs that actually became hits.

“Vision of Love” is fine with me! It’s a very strong debut single and the vocal performance is extraordinary. It’s going down in history already as one of the greatest debut singles and will continue to go down in history as that. It deserves the hype.

However, if all of the songs weren’t going to be successful (and this has happened with some albums by other artists before), then the “right ones” should have. Again, it’s not that any of the songs were bad; it’s mostly a matter of comparative quality (comparing the songs with each other).

Of course everyone will have their preferences. Some of y’all may actually agree that the “right songs” from this album became as popular as they did. I wouldn’t argue either way because it’s such a great album all around. I just wish that songs like “All In Your Mind”, “Alone In Love”, “You Need Me”, “Sent from Up Above”, and “There’s Got to Be a Way” (especially for its message) were bigger hits. Those first three were definitely stronger than “I Don’t Wanna Cry”, “Someday”, and “Love Takes Time”—all of which went #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. It takes a lot for me to say that because I’m floored every time I listen to “I Don’t Wanna Cry”, I’m always going on about how “Someday” is one of Mariah’s best songs overall vocally, and “Love Takes Time” was one of my first favorite Mariah songs when I started exploring her catalog at the start of the pandemic.

I believe that these songs should have been released as singles (edit: other than TGTBAW, which was a single). I believe they would have gotten the success levels and appreciation they deserved.

“Obsessed” vs. “Touch My Body” — Which song do you think is a bigger hit?

Don’t let the chart positions fool you! “Touch My Body” may have gone #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, but “Obsessed” (peaked at #7) can sit right with it and any of the hits on The Emancipation of Mimi.

Both songs were extremely popular during their time, and both songs are still extremely popular today among Mariah’s 21st-century hits.

Both songs were also incredibly successful internationally. “Touch My Body” may have had the edge there, but “Obsessed” was no slouch either!

I think these two hits are about as close as it gets when comparing multiple of Mariah’s hits. Which one do you think was the bigger song?

Mariah had a fire in her when she recorded the emotions album

I just relistented that album and my god Mariah had to be pissed off or something because she was singing crazy all over that album.

Every song on that album got some absolutely nasty vocals that leave you comepletly shocked.

I remember Mariah saying she recorded that album feeling she had something to prove and she certainly proved it.

If the album wasn’t so close to her debut in release time then I think it would’ve been way bigger

Any song recs for my Mariah playlist?

I’m not super familiar with her catalog after E=MC^2, and I don’t have a lot of time to explore it. I love her fluffy love songs, her more R&B stuff, as well as her ballads. Please lmk what to add!

Isn’t She Lovely (Tease)

Mariah’s voice during The Emancipation of Mimi era was truly the second coming of her vocal excellence. I always wish that she actually did a studio recording of it because of this little tease. Her voice sounds radiant and resonant; you can tell she really appreciated Jake Nava’s work.

This clip was taken from MTV: Making the Video with a behind the scenes look at “Get Your Number”; Jake was the director.

• In which vocal era would you have liked to hear Mariah Carey cover Stevie Wonder’s “Isn’t She Lovely”? ⬇️

I Dont Wanna Cry appreciation post

She said in interviews that this song has no meaning for her and she doesn’t feel connected to it. She also hated the producer who she collaborated with on it.

I validate that but at the same time, I think she’s too hard on it.

It’s a gorgeous track. The melody, verses, and chorus are all so dramatic and gorgeous. The fact that she wasn’t enthusiastic when recording it and STILL sounded so passionate and authentic shows how talented she is.

The final chorus is arguably one of her best vocal moments. She was a beast on this song.

The music video is also one of my favorites by her despite her hating that too. The sepia shots add to the midwestern country girl vibe that we’re going for. It was cute. It’s also one of the only videos she did during that era where she had a super sexy love interest.

Also, does anyone get Selena Quintanilla vibes from it? It sounds like something she would’ve recorded for the Dreaming of You album

Charmbracelet Era

Can we just sit and talk about how critically underrated the Charmbracelet era is?! This is one of my favorite Mariah songs and I’ve literally never met a soul that has ever even heard about it lol. Poor thing 😭

Let's make our own ''Someone's Ugly Daughter'' Booklet/Visuals

If you could choose some visuals for Mariah's (hopefully) upcoming release of her long-anticipated secret grunge album, which visuals would you choose?

Here are some from different photoshoots I think def fit the vibe.

Pic 4: Butterfly Publicity Photos by Naomi Kaltman

Pic 5: Entertainment Weekly Magazine by Matthew Rolston

Who did the final rap verse BETTER in Mariah Carey's "I Still Believe (Pure Imagination)" remix... Krayzie Bone or DA Brat?

RapRiah

I love when RapRiah makes an appearance. On Clown, Infinity, and Last Kiss she makes her presence known. Are there any other songs where our girl is spitting some bars?

Breakdown

So I got a question for y’all: what do you think the story behind Breakdown really is? Like, who do y’all think she was talking about? We all know the story of how the song came together, but not necessarily who it was about or what she was truly going through emotionally at that time. Because that song is DEEP. I have my little theory lol. I kinda feel like it might be part of the Jeter collection 👀 but overall, it’s just such an incredible song. So personal, sensitive, and painfully relatable. Her songwriting on it is insane. Truly one of her best written songs.
