Isn’t She Lovely (Tease)

Mariah’s voice during The Emancipation of Mimi era was truly the second coming of her vocal excellence. I always wish that she actually did a studio recording of it because of this little tease. Her voice sounds radiant and resonant; you can tell she really appreciated Jake Nava’s work.

This clip was taken from MTV: Making the Video with a behind the scenes look at “Get Your Number”; Jake was the director.

• In which vocal era would you have liked to hear Mariah Carey cover Stevie Wonder’s “Isn’t She Lovely”? ⬇️

“Work” was such a Sonic the Hedgehog-esque vibe

Janet’s unreleased tracks of any era are sooo good. “Work is no exception”! Definitely one of my go-to tracks! 🔥

The Godwinns win the WWF Tag Team Championship for the 2nd time

At Badd Blood: In Your House on 10/5/1997, The Godwinns defeated The Headbangers to become the new WWF Tag Team Champions. The sitout Powerbomb from Phineas was well executed and timed; shout out to Mosh too! Ultimately it was the “numbers game” as Uncle Cletus held Thrasher back from making the save. Sadly, their new reign would only last 2 whole days.

“Rock with You” Brandy ft. Heavy D

All of the real Brandy fans know that her 1995 cover of Michael Jackson’s “Rock with You” is one of the most overlooked songs in her catalog. Heavy D consistently brought the flow and hype that the going up and coming R&B artists of the 90s needed! Brandy’s voice here is so unique; it’s past the debut era but not yet fully matured into the Never Say Never era.

Quincy Jones was brilliant for reproducing Michael’s no.1 hit with Brandy’s unmatched vocal qualities. “Q’s Jook Joint” released in 1995 is a great album altogether.

I’m That Chick (LiVE) - Mariah Carey

This performance of “I’m That Chick” from the 2008 Fashion Rocks Show held in New York’s Radio City Music Hall (9/5/2008) is one of my favorites! The song itself deserved much more love but it did reach no.82 on the Billboard Hot R&B chart. She sounds and looks A+MAZING!!

Back At One (LiVE) - Brian McKnight

In 1999, Brian McKnight released his second album with Motown Records named “Back At One”. The lead track “Back At One” was Brian McKnight’s highest charting song of his career reaching no.2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and no.7 on the Billboard Hot R&B chart.

The performance in the clip is from the 27th Annual American Music Awards that took place on 1/17/2000. Brian’s mic was definitely ON as he delivered a performance of vocal perfection. 🔥

“Saw you stuntin’ on your Instagram but that 🤫 ain’t everythang…”

I was so turnt for “Thristy” from the moment it came out. Mariah Carey really hasn’t met a genre she cannot do. When she digs deep into her rap and hip-hop bag she always brings out straight club BANGERS! Rich Homie Quan was the perfect choice for the extra added vibes. ❤️

“You think I won’t 🤬 up my hair and take it there?”

“HEAT” would’ve definitely been a radio HIT if the label had seen how on-brand the song and the sound was at the time. I always enjoy Nivea reference that Mariah throws in during the adlibs. This song shole is the 1! 🔥🔥🔥

Don’t Look Any Further (TV performance) - Dennis Edwards and Siedah Garrett

In 1984, Dennis Edwards released his debut single “Don’t Look Any Further” from the album of the same name. The song proved to be a success for Motown Records reaching no.72 on the Billboard Hot 100 and no.2 on the Billboard Hot R&B chart. The beat has been heavily sampled throughout the years by various artists, especially Hip-Hop. This clip is from 1984 when Dennis Edwards and Siedah Garrett gave an in-person performance of the song.

“That’s how you greet yo sister?”

I was so excited to see Brandy on “One on One” as Michelle. Brandy and sitcoms just go together! Seeing all of the times her and Ray J have found there ways onto television is a testament to their sibling bond. The Michelle character was kinda messy and lowkey a soft launch into her role as “Chardonnay” on The Game later on.

Chyna wins the WWF Intercontinental Championship for the (official) 2nd time

On 8/27/00 at WWF SUMMERSLAM, Eddie Guerrero and Chyna wrestled Val Venis(c) and Trish Stratus in an Intergender Tag Team Match for the WWF Intercontinental Title. The rules were that both Val and Trish were defending the IC Title; Chyna pinned Trish to win the belt! This very unique rule gave Val an out, protected Eddie, and made Chyna look massive against a green and bumping Trish Stratus.

Livin’ in A World (They Didn’t Make)

This song has been in my head nonstop lately. I am always pleased to hear Janet blend in with the piano when she sings “and we’re just…”! The lyrical content is still as relevant today as it was in 1989. I’m so glad the entire body of work is still receiving its accolades and forward to this day. 🖤🔑🎹

“You Bring Me Joy” cover

Brandy was only 14 when she sang Anita Baker’s “You Bring Me Joy” on the short-lived sitcom “Thea”. Listen at how mature her voice was. She was truly born to sing. Also, it’s cool seeing her share the screen with future “Andell” and “Tasha Mack”. 🥰

Uh Huh - AlfaMega ft. T. I.

In 2008, AlfaMega dropped “Uh Huh” featuring T. I. “Uh Huh” was and still is a Banger. The popularity of this song helped hype up his debut album “I AM ALFAMEGA”. Man when this song dropped I was rapping it word for word. AlfaMega is a no nonsense 🥷🏾 that tells it like it is! And you already know “It’s a Nitti beat”! 🔥

Side note: That skit in the beginning is comical yet telling.

“I will NOT change my hair.”

Kyle takes a stand against his job concerning his locs. He makes it perfectly clear that his hair is his heritage. Ultimately, it is revealed that Lawrence (a brotha) was the only one uncomfortable with Kyle’s hairstyle and no one else had an issue with it at all. Kyle’s speech wasn’t totally in vain however, as he was promptly informed that he was being promoted to “Funds Manager”.

Run, Run, Run (LiVE) - The Supremes

In 1964, The Supremes released their third single “Run, Run, Run” from their album “WHERE DID OUR LOVE GO”. The single and album versions feature The Four Tops on background vocals along with The Supremes. The song reached no.93 on the Billboard Hot 100 and no.22 on the Billboard Hot R&B chart.

The performance in the clip is from the T.A.M.I. Show in 1964; it was a part of a medley of songs which is why it was reduced to a verse and a chorus. Mary and Florence really did well with the singing and the choreography. And Diana’s energy was so vibrant here. All 3 ladies voices were so clear and resonant!

This is an appreciation post for “To the Floor”! Mariah, Nelly, and Pharrell match each other’s vibes so effortlessly! The Neptunes did their thing on the beat and the hook and adlibs to this song are so catchy!

“I SAID IT’S ALL GOIN DOWN TONIGHT”
“I said it’s all going down to-niii-ght”

Brandy’s iconic Themesong to “Moesha” could have very well been a full song and I wouldn’t’ve been mad one bit! The song SLAPS and the bass/beat is fluidly funky!

Brandy’s vocal runs and phrasings are just phenomenal no matter what! At the end on the first version she adlibs “Mo…eeeshaaa” but in the second version where her voice has slightly matured she adlibs “Mo..uhhhh”! ❤️

Which version of the song do you like the best?

- The first version from the earlier seasons during the “Brandy (self-titled album)” vocal era?

- The second version from the later seasons during the “Never Say Never” vocal era?

Also, which opening sequence/credits do you like the best?

In 1968, Gladys Knight & The Pips released their single “The End of Our Road” from their album “Feelin’ Bluesy”. The song was a success for the group and Motown Records; it reached no.15 on the Billboard Hot 100 and no.5 on the Billboard Hot R&B chart!

The appearance in the clip is from Gladys Knight & The Pips’ LiVE performance of the song, 1968, on The Mike Douglas Show. Gladys’ voice is undeniable! 🔥
