What’s a 90s hip-hop artist or group that people barely mention anymore?

I’m not talking about somebody who never had any attention.

I mean an artist or group who had a real moment in the 90s — maybe a video, a single, a strong album, or a solid following — but somehow doesn’t come up much anymore when people talk about that era.

The kind of name that makes you go:

“Damn, I haven’t heard that name in years.”

Who comes to mind first?

And if you want, drop the song or album you remember them for.

2Pac, Outlawz “Letter 2 The President” (1999)

One of my favorite 2Pac/Outlawz tracks ever, some of the lyrics have held up even to this day. Listening to a lot of Pac lately in due to his murder trial. Seeing how Pac… Never mind. Rest In Peace PAC/KADAFI/FATAL/BIG SKYE/& YOUNG NOBLE!! Pac will forever be one of my favorite artist of ALL TIME.

My favorite hat was apparently a rare piece of 90’s hip hop culture

In the 90’s when I was a kid, I owned a purple hat with embroidered sunglasses with spirals in the lenses. It had the words “HYPE VISION” on it, and I remember it being associated with Ed Lover.

I lost it many years ago, but I just wanted to see it again for old times sake so I looked it up. NOTHING. I know it exists because I owned it, but I can’t find a picture of it! Does anyone else remember it? Thanks!

New York's top 10 MVPs of 1994

Nas, Biggie, Wu-Tang Clan, A Tribe Called Quest, Gang Starr, Beastie Boys, Craig Mack, Jeru the Damaja, Keith Murray and Gravediggaz were NY's top 10 MVPs who dominated 1994 due to their timeless projects, classic records and strong momentum.

Nas and Biggie were 2 of NY's best MCs as they changed the landscape of NY with game-changing albums in Illmatic and Ready to Die alongside being the 1A and 1B in terms of being King of New York. Wu-Tang had a lot of heavy momentum with the massive success of 36 Chambers along with Meth being the group's first breakout star as he reached solo success with Tical.

Tribe still carried great momentum from Midnight Marauders while Gang Starr was at their peak with Hard to Earn and Beasties delivered another classic masterpiece in Ill Communication.

Craig Mack put Bad Boy on the map with Flava in Ya Ear and its iconic remix while Jeru became one of the hottest lyricists with The Sun Rises in the East, Keith Murray also emerged as a premier MC with the Most Beautifullest Thing in the World and Gravediggaz pioneered horrorcore rap with 6 Feet Deep.

Honorable mentions: Black Moon, Organized Konfusion, O.C.

Which rapper’s passing still bothers you years later?

For me, it’s Tupac. Sometimes I’ll be listening to one of his songs and it randomly hits me like damn, this guy is really gone. Not in a “legend” kind of way, but in the sense that he was only 25 years old and had so much more left to do.

What makes it harder is that it felt like he was only getting better with each album. People talk about his music, but Pac was more than just a rapper. He was passionate, outspoken, and had a lot of interesting ideas about politics, poverty, race, and society in general. Whether you agreed with everything he said or not, he was someone who made people think.

I think that’s why his death still bothers me. You can’t help but wonder what he would’ve become if he’d made it to 35, 45, or even 55. More music, more films, more activism, who knows? It feels like we only got a glimpse of what he was capable of.
I feel the same way about Biggie. Both were taken way too young, right when they were entering their prime. Every time I go back and listen to their music, I can’t help but think about what could’ve been. Which artists death affected yall the most?

What's a hip hop equivalent to the "No Stairway to Heaven" rule in most hip hop spaces, record stores and places ?

Explain this to me

I personally am I massive 2Pac fan, and need to get that out of the way. I have a collection of all his albums and a shit ton of his singles on vinyl, I make covers for his unreleased stuff, and read stuff about him daily. That being said, I do think Biggie is a good rapper. He's nice and smooth, and the beats compliment him well. That being said, I don't understand this one thing people say

"Biggie was the best lyricist in NY". Apart from the fact that I think Nas is better, I think there's no universe in which Biggie is better than Big L. That guy was (in my opinion) the greatest MC to touch a mic (in terms of rhyming, and lyrics). He's very much different from 2Pac don't get me wrong, but I think he wipes Biggie. Am I being delusional? Or are people forgetting about Big L**?**

I just put on It Was Written and think that one has aged very well. What else holds up and what doesn't?
