20 years in QA, moving toward Data Science — what career path makes the most sense for me?

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for some honest career advice from people in tech/data. I am from India.

I have around 20 years of experience in software QA. My background includes end-to-end manual testing, test planning, test reporting, and leading teams. I also have some experience with automation using Selenium with C#. In addition, I’m a Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) and can manage a small scrum team in a Scrum Master role.

Right now, I’m pursuing a Master’s in Data Science from a well-known university through their distance learning program. My goal is to understand whether moving into data science is a realistic and worthwhile next step for me at this stage of my career.

I’d really appreciate advice on a few things:

  • What is the career scope for someone like me in data science?
  • Would my QA and Scrum background be considered valuable, or would I be starting from zero?
  • Which roles would be the best fit: Data Analyst, Data Scientist, ML-related QA, Product/Data role, or something else?
  • What skills should I focus on most to become employable in this space?
  • Is it realistic to target data science directly, or should I aim for a transition role first?

I’m open to honest feedback. I want to make a practical move, not just chase a trend. If anyone has made a similar transition, I’d love to hear how you approached it.

Thanks in advance.
