My boyfriend (27M) and I (26F) were on a call the other night, talking about our pasts and past relationships. I started thinking about some of his experiences before me, and I felt insecure.

I told him, "I really don't like your past." I wasn't name-calling or attacking him, but I was honest that it bothers me.

He got upset and said he doesn't feel supported or accepted by me. That hurt, because I've tried to accept almost everything about him. I supported his career, and when he was broke I often covered our bills and dates and let him do what he wanted. We argued, and the call ended with us breaking up.

Now I don't know what to do. His past happened before me and he can't change it, but I can't control how I feel. I don't want to lie and pretend I'm completely fine with it, but I also don't want to lose him over an insecurity I might be able to work through.

Is this something a relationship can recover from? If you've dealt with insecurity about a partner's past, how did you handle it, and how would you approach talking to him again?
