France/belgium paper and ink recommandations

Hi there fellow french/belgian calligrapher or letter enthousiats that live in France ou Belgium !

I'm looking for good recommendations regarding paper and inks mainly but i'll take any nibs and holder tips as well. I'm currently living in France but will soon move to Brussels.

I'm not always satisfied with the paper I buy. My favorite is from rhodia in term of feeling but sadly there is line. I also like the clairefontaine Graf it paper in 90g. Is there any paper that you like ? Preferably smooth paper, thin (max 120g) and not too expensive since I need a lot to practice. I have the same problem with ink. Winsor and Newton black is good but not practical for an oblique older (maybe I should use a brush to fill the nib ? Or should I try walnut/iron gall ink?) and also a bit too liquidy for pointed nibs ? I tried adding a bit of china ink bit then the flow was horrendous. Do you have any ink that you love and that is available easily in France or in Belgium ? I would really like to buy it directly in shops but I can order if needed as long as it's not too expensive and frequently needed.

Thank you for you answer, will greatly appreciate any insight :)

&#x200B;

&#x200B;

Ligature in typeable text problem

Hi ! I'm relatively new to coding with html/css and I have an issue that I really don't understand... I try to make a web specimen for a font with specific glyphs and ligatures and I want the user to be able to try and type them. I tried using an imput "text" and a <p> with the content editable ans the problain remains the same : when I type in the webpage, the ligatures don't show properly but when I resize the page they are good.

This is really weird because the ligatures work well when typed directly in html and not in the input text on chrome and also the first "layer" of ligatures works normally. I have a first set of glyphs composed by adding a - and another symbol (*, &, # or %) and then you can type those next to each other to create the "ligatured" version of these new glyphs. That second step is the only one not working.

I tried changing de distance between letters, enabling rlig (maybe I did it wrong?) and I basically have no Idea what the problem is. You can see it in the photos : first picture the placeholder where you can see a working ligature, second picture after I typed, not work, and third after the resize, working. I also put my code in the pictures ! My font is in woff2 but same problem with otf.

I would gladly appreciate any leads of answer :)

Linux for graphic design ? Which distro ?

Linux distros for graphic design

Hey there !

I'm currently studying graphic design and I'm getting more abd more interested in open source/libre alternatives to windows and adobe. I talked a lot with a friend about dual booting linux on my computer as a transition to try it but still have my usual programs nearby. I already used ubuntu a little bit during my 3 years of engineering school but I almost forgot everything (huge thanks to the massive depressive episode I did there).

I'm looking for graphic designer who have used linux for an extended period of time and will greatly appreciate if you can share your experience as well as some tips/things that you found useful to make the switch. Also, do you think there is some distro that are better than other for graphic design softwares ? I plan to use scribus, inkscape (never used it but heard it's a good replacement to illustrator), fontlab (not free or open source but font forge is horrendous to use) and maybe blender.

One problem that i'm facing is that there is no good alternative to Photoshop. I heard of gimp but everyone seems to say that it's not really a match and it's the only software that seems to be a problem for a lot of people that want to do the shift. I obviously don't need all the generative ai bullshit so I probably will use and older version but I heard that a lot of them still don't run on linux. Any thoughts on that ? I don't use photoshop to draw at all, i mainly use it to edit pictures and use effects on my posters.

Have a great day and I hope some folks will stop by to share their experience :)
