I think I did it!!!!
Just now, I made contact from Nova Scotia to Jamaica on 38LSB. 12 watts barefoot
99 Jamaica to 733 Nova Scotia and he come back to me 3 times in total

Am I the only one trying to call out DX land on a completely stock Uniden 980 ssb (4watt am/12 watt ssb) , and am I wasting my time?
Because it sure feels like it, I wait for the skip to start rolling (usually when ch 6 / 11 start coming in clear) then I go to 36-40 LSB and call out CQ CQ DX LAND, my made up operator number, my location, waving a stand, standing by and I don’t get any reply ever even when people are having full clear conversations on 38. I even wait for them to go “on the side” and try to get in again.
Hey everyone! What an experience! LOL
With everyone’s help I built my first ever 1/4 wave ground plane antenna.
It’s not pretty, I know that already, but it’s functional!
My SWR meter is showing a reading of about 1.4ish on channel 1 and about 1.5ish on channel 40 and right around that on channel 20. That’s as far as I got. I’m happy now that’s it’s working, the I started with the SWR a bit over 3 so to watch it come down as I trimmed the antenna was actually satisfying. The whole experience was over all.
Soldered my first ever wire and I’m just as proud of that solder as I am the entire project lol.
radio Built in SWR meter showed very close to the external SWR and is currently showing 1.32 SWR
Hey everyone, this one has been on my mind so I have to ask to a community who knows.
If your tuning your antenna, and the SWR is high, how much damage is being done to the radio every time you key and hold to CAL, and then again to read SWR.
After window shopping the 980ssb since its release I just got one, and I want to do as much right as I can.
Thank you,
Hey everyone, just ordered a bearcat 980 ssb and a little wil antenna for a road trip next week and also ordered a 9a 13.8 bench power supply so I can use it in the house down the road, but for that I’ll need an antenna and i am already over budget so I was considering building an antenna but every time I research the topic I get a little over whelmed.
I think I’d like to make a vertical dipole, and get it as high up as I can on my garage.
When I look at the so 239 chassis they seem to come in sideways, so my first question is can the main antenna feed wire turn 90 degrees to go into the center pin?
Also does the ground plane wire just get soldered to the chassis of the mount
I’ve wanted to get into CBs and ham radio for some time so please be kind, I really hope to join in on the skip on ssb
