Encouraging new growth on mature, branchy tree

Encouraging new growth on mature, branchy tree

I have a plant that had some trauma do to lack of watering and lost a lot on the lower half, but still has a great (and growing) canopy. The tree is already branchy up to, but I want it to get fuller down low. I've watched a lot about pruning, which I need to do up top but doubt it'll drive the energy down lower. I was going to try notching, but can't figure out which branch / main trunk to do that on. If it were your tree, what would you do? Note that there is a large skylight right above this tree.

And please ignore life's messiness on the step next to the tree :).
