Mac Studio M5 Max with 48gb vs 64gb RAM

Hey there,

I had been using a laptop for ages until I finally moved into a place with a dedicated office, so this year I was finally ready to invest in a desktop. I got a Studio Display XDR and I really wanted an M5 Mac Mini (in the spring) but the M5 Mac Minis were postponed until this autumn, and so I bought a base model M4 Mac Mini during the springtime with the intent on turning it in when the M5's came out.

Now that the M5 models have come out, I decided to go with an M5 Max Mac Studio instead of the mini just the cost difference between the upgraded-mini-that-I-wanted and a studio was pretty small.

I mostly do just music production with Ableton on my computer as well as some video editing and exporting. I don't do much beyond that but certain tasks were slow with 16gb RAM and so I was eager to upgrade. I'm in a financially comfortable position and so I'm okay with spending money on a machine that exceeds my needs, but obviously I need to draw the line somewhere because I'm not gonna get some $10k+ Ultra or something like that.

I settled on the M5 Max Mac Studio with 48gb RAM and 2TB storage (the 2TB storage is nonnegotiable for me) but I'm wondering if I should cancel my order and repurchase with the 64gb RAM. It's only $400 more. However, if I'm honest with myself, this machine is a lot of overkill in the first place, and I think I'd be just fine even with 32gb.

But I see a lot of people on here saying 64gb is a bare minimum for mac studio viability. I understand that the answer ultimately comes down to what I need to do with the machine, which is honestly not that much, but I wanted to ask if anyone has other points to consider that I haven't yet. Like maybe a 48gb might be difficult to resell if it's too much RAM for xyz tasks but not enough for local LLM.

Any input is very welcome. Thank you!

Question about self-driving to (and from) Finland/Sweden

Hey everyone, planning a solo trip for early March in Tromsø. I'd love to check out Abisko but I'm very annoyed with the train ticket system (only booking out three months in advance and a lack of schedule regularity week-to-week means I can't plan as far ahead as I'd like) and would rather rent a vehicle and drive myself.

I am well aware that weather is unpredictable and sometimes roads close.

Anyway, weather permitting, I'd love to drive myself to Abisko to stay one night, check out the ski lift, then drive back to Tromsø the next day. Also on another day I'd consider checking out Kilpisjärvi as a day trip from Tromsø. I'm considering these trips because I'm not sure I'll have much to do during the day while waiting for nighttime for northern lights tours. I'd consider a Senja island tour.

Any input/advice is welcomed! Thanks

Edit: thanks for the input everyone. I do have heavy experience in driving on shitty ice and deep snow but not on these specific roads nor in these countries so I'll just stay in Tromsø for three nights then fly home. I appreciate everyone's input!

Any updates about the tourist falling into the Jökulsá river today?

I know there's another thread but comments are locked and I'm not sure why - I was just recently there and am just curious about updates. I'm not sure where to look since we can't comment on the other thread and it's just frozen in time.

Question about the diameter of the BOTTOM of various Signature Skillet sizes

I own the 9" Signature Skillet, and the diameter of the part that actually makes physical contact is about 7". I want to buy a second Signature Skillet in a larger size, but my electric heating areas on my stove are not massive, and I want to know if buying the 11.75" would be pointless as the diameter of the pan might exceed the diameter of the heating areas on the stove.

If anyone has the Signature Skillet in 10.25" or 11.75", any chance you could measure the diameter of the base? Any input is very appreciated!

Best/most trusted websites for importing LC from abroad?

Hey everyone,

I recently returned a Signature Skillet (10.25") in Marseille so that I could order the same thing in Azure, and then while I was waiting for the Azure to come back in stock, they literally removed it from the US LC website!! I contacted them and they said they're out and not planning to restock. I am super super in love with Azure and so I'm interested in trying to import it from abroad.

I'm wondering what international sites are most reliable for this purpose. I've read both great and terrible things about Tattahome and Bobleisure, while I've read almost exclusively good things about Meesterslijpers.

Does anyone know of other websites they've had good experiences with? Price, shipping cost, and shipping time are not big issues for me, the only thing that I really care about is reliability. I don't mind waiting two or three months for something as long as I know it will arrive, and ideally that the company would respond professionally if there were any order issues.

Thanks for your insight! Hope everyone is having a great day 😄
