Update - retained pregnancy tissue, D&C surgery

I figured I would provide an update so no one thinks I died! Monday I posted about having a LOT of bleeding and then dizziness in what I thought was my first period after my medical abortion, which was 4 weeks ago. I was bleeding through a super tampon on top of a pad every 1-2 hours, and huge clots and big splashes of blood were coming out every time I sat on the toilet.

I learned that I was not supposed to be using tampons, only maxi pads, and I wonder if using the tampons was stopping the flow somehow of blood and caused more clots. I also took a bath, which I think loosened things up and caused lots more clots and blood to come out, which is when the dizziness started. I ate some food hoping it would help the dizziness but it did not. I called my doctor (I have been out of town) and they said to go to the ER.

I went to Urgent Care first because I stubbornly did not want to go to the ER, but they then sent me to the ER, where I had a blood test taken. My hemoglobin was 12.2 so not quite low enough to be considered anemic, but definitely on the low side. They did a pelvic exam and the doctor could see pregnancy tissue coming out of my cervix.

They then did a vaginal ultrasound and saw some more pregnancy tissue inside of my uterus, along with two small 1cm fibroids that I didn’t know were there. This was at about midnight. Eventually at 4am the OB/GYN came and told me about the retained pregnancy tissue, and recommended a D&C (dilation and cutterage) which is a when they dilate the cervix and scrape the tissue out of the uterus. She also suggested that I could get the tissue sucked out in outpatient with no general anesthesia, but that sounded awful so I elected to have the surgery in the hospital.

I spent the night in the hospital and they did the surgery yesterday at 12:30pm. It went well and I feel a lot better today (just a lot of fatigue) with minimal spotting. Anyway that’s what happened! Hope my experience might help someone, if you’re having a lot of bleeding and dizziness weeks later after a medical abortion it’s a good idea to go to the ER. The retained pregnancy tissue can cause sepsis which no one wants. Thanks for reading!

First period after MA - when to worry? How much blood is normal

I had my MA about 4 weeks ago and just started my first period since. I am bleeding more than I have ever bled! Was bleeding through multiple “regular” tampons yesterday and multiple “super” tampons today. I am currently sitting in the bath and passed a huge clot about the size of a large grape and the water is all bright dark red (it is a large tub). I have passed multiple clots about that size today and yesterday. I am not having any crazy symptoms other than the fact that this is the most blood I have ever seen come out of my body. Maybe a little dizziness/nausea. Any advice would be appreciated because I am a little freaked out.

Is it possible to donate the embryo and placenta from my abortion to science?

Has anyone looked into this? I successfully had a medical abortion at home yesterday at 6.5 weeks. It did not sit right with me to flush the tissue down the toilet, so instead I put it in a jar and put it in the freezer. I would love to be able to donate this to science/medical research. It seems like it might not be possible because of strict laws. I am in NC.

My experience so far. MA today and tomorrow.

I found out I was 6 weeks pregnant last week. I live in NC, where abortion is allowed until 12 weeks, but there is a 3 day waiting period before you can receive the abortion. I absolutely felt the need to get the embryo out of my body as soon as possible. The thought of it growing inside me is sickening.

I am 36 years old and this is my first pregnancy. I have PCOS and I stupidly assumed I was immune, after years of not being careful especially in my 20s. However I recently started a low dose of GLP-1 and I believe that increased my fertility. My period was two weeks late and my breasts were very sore, so I ordered pregnancy tests online. When I saw the positive result, my heart sank. I shouted, “F*CK.” I cried.

I had this feeling like my body betrayed me. I was always on the fence about having kids but as soon as I saw that red line on the test I immediately knew I did not want to have a baby. I immediately looked up how to get an abortion. The thought of having to have my body stretched and ripped apart sounds absolutely horrific.

I have partied a lot this summer, definitely been drunk 5 or 6 times in the last 6 weeks, so I feel like the baby would probably have fetal alcohol syndrome. And I feel this incredible shame around that. Like, if I do have a kid one day, I want the pregnancy to be perfect, I want it to be on purpose so as soon as I conceive I won’t have anything in my system that can harm the baby. I want to have a stable partner who can help take care of me during pregnancy and then help take care of the baby.

I looked up the size of a 6 week embryo and this helped me a lot. It’s just the size of a lentil. Or a small swollen tick, which made me feel better. But when I read that the embryo starts to get little toe buds at 6 weeks this broke my heart. I have been crying so much.

I am not sure if it’s from the pregnancy hormones, but I have been feeling slightly suicidal after getting the news. And the process of figuring out how to get an abortion in the South has been excruciating. I managed to get the pills very quickly (ordered online) and I just took the first dose of Mifepristone. I will take the Misoprostal tomorrow. I barely slept last night and I feel awful from the lack of sleep. I am dreading tomorrow but I ordered a heating pad and I have my ibuprofen and tylenol ready to go.

I feel so bitter about the fact that abortion is so political. It’s f*cking healthcare and it’s horrible that it’s so hard for women to access it. I was unable to get a surgical abortion because they had to fly a doctor in from out of state (in Virginia) and there were no appointments until mid-August. The fact that Tennessee and Texas are right there where abortion is completely illegal makes me want to be violent. The fact that abortion is illegal in other countries makes me want to be violent. My heart is broken for all of the women that do not have access to healthcare. My heart is broken for myself that I have gone through days of mental anguish knowing something was growing inside of me that I don’t want to be there. I feel lucky that I was able to get the pills so easily.

Thank you for reading. If anyone has any advice for me for the Misoprostal tomorrow I would be grateful.
