Bad habits I have as a +1500 elo player and how to fix them?
Bad habits I keep repeating:
- Sending villagers to farms immediately and never keeping 10+ on wood. I make farms too early and then struggle to get a strong boom going. Once I have 60 wood, I instantly make farms. A lot of the time I don’t even need that extra food if I properly calculated how many food villagers I needed for villager production + military.
- Constantly changing the villager gather point from tc. I keep setting it every 10 seconds to a different point; instead of just leaving it on e.g. wood to stabilize my wood income. It also creates a lot of unnecessary EAPM that could instead be spent controlling my army.
- Not assigning units to control groups. For example, 1 for knights, 2 for archers, etc. Because of this I manually select units all the time, which massively increases my EAPM while also making my control less efficient.
- Not assigning military buildings to hotkeys either. For example, 3 for stables and 4 for archery ranges. Instead I mostly rely on the “Select All” feature. It doesn’t seem like a huge issue at first, but overall it slows me down, feels exhausting, and makes queueing units less smooth.
I’m not exactly sure how to break these habits. (The first one is less of a mechanical habit, but I still count it.)
Any ideas on how to properly address this? I’ve been actively thinking about these issues, but once the game gets stressful/sweaty I completely forget about them...
Good thing is that I'm aware of these and I know that my apm would be much less and much more efficient if I would be avoiding repeating these "mistakes"...
Anyone else can relate to any of the points I listed here?
Cav archers are the most annoying units in the game, especially when you have to defend
I’m around 1550–1650 ELO and honestly, Cavalry Archers are a nightmare. They just circle your whole base and snipe lumberjacks until your entire economy is idled.
Trying to counter them feels like a joke:
- Archers? Good luck. They’re faster than you, so you’ll never catch them and they are equally strong.
- Knights? Good luck. Unless you have way more units, your knights just die without touching them. Hit and run is unstoppable.
- Skirms? Sure, but then you’re dumping food into trash units while he’s clicking up to Imp way faster because his main army doesn't cost food.
The mobility is what tilts me. He just sends 2 or 3 CA into a woodline and my vills are useless. I know scorps and skirms technically work, but the micro and multitasking that is required is high. I'm stuck reacting to everything he does. It feels like he’s always the one in control and always clicks imp faster because i can barely counter attack him due to his endless attacks on my vills.
