This is a pretty good watch (17 ish minutes) that basically details our historically bad defense (one of the worst in the statcast era) all around in both the infield and outfield. Also details some of the major regressions from the big three (Cal, Julio, Naylor) and lack of playing time from Donovan.

What I found surprising is that the 2026 Mariners are one of only three teams to rank top 10 in both hitting (by wrc+) and pitching (by fip); 10th in hitting (102 wrc+) and 9th in pitching (4.02 fip), with Dodgers (2nd, 5th) and Brewers (3rd, 2nd). However, their defense has been absolutely dogshit with -54 FRV, somewhat due to Cal becoming much worse at framing, going from one of the best framers in the league in 2025 to one of the worst this year, as well as Julio's sprint speed taking a step back. In fact, Josh Naylor's +2 FRV is the only positive position on the field.

In lieu of Donovan's absence (who accrued 1 WAR in 39 games), the Mariners have had -0.1 WAR in the 3rd base position for the entirety of the season (this is including Donovan btw), with a combo of J.P., Colt, Rodden, Rivas, and Wilson, ranking 29th in the league for production at 3B.

Also a lot of offensive regression from the big three as well with Cal chasing much more (especially 1st half), Julio's discipline (as well as pretty bad batted ball luck tbh), and Naylor's decline in bat speed. Overall pretty detailed video that yall should check out
