AITAH for wanting priority over the shared car because I need it for work?
My sister(22)and I(19)currently share a car, and I’m starting to get really frustrated with the arrangement.
I’m trying to save up for my own car, but the problem is that I need to be able to work in order to actually save that money. One of my jobs requires me to drive, so I’ve had to turn down shifts that I otherwise could have worked simply because my sister needs the car.
I also tutor on the side. For example, on Mondays I sometimes have two tutoring sessions back-to-back in different locations. The only realistic way for me to get from one to the other on time is to drive.
My sister also works, and she prefers/feels that she needs to drive to work. However, her job is at one location for several hours and is accessible by public transport. It would definitely be more inconvenient for her to take public transport, but it’s possible. With some of my work, driving isn’t just more convenient, I literally cannot take the shift without a car.
Another thing that’s frustrating me is the cost. My sister drives the car more than I do, and as far as I understand, she basically only pays for petrol. Meanwhile, when I don’t have access to the car, I’m paying for public transport and constantly having to top up my Opal card. So I’m sometimes paying petrol and public transport, despite using the car less.
I know I’m the one who needs to save for my own car, and I don’t think my sister should never be allowed to use the car. I just feel like the current arrangement is making it harder for me to get to the point where I can afford my own car in the first place.
I think work that requires the car should take priority over situations where public transport is realistically available, but my sister doesn’t agree.
So, AITAH for thinking I should get priority for the car when I need it for work, especially when the alternative for me is turning down shifts and losing income?
