[Michigan] Michigan UIA Changed My Claim to "Quit" – Isn't This a Layoff?

I'm really confused about how Michigan UIA classifies my separation, and I'm wondering if anyone has been through something similar.

Here's what happened:

  • My employer told me there was no more work available for me in Michigan and that my last day would be at the end of May.
  • Before that, they asked if I would be willing to work in Arizona for a few months.
  • I told them I wasn't able to relocate to Arizona.
  • They said, "Okay," and later informed me that my last day of work would be at the end of May because there was no more work for me in Michigan, and the company was relocating its office from Michigan to Arizona.
  • I never submitted a resignation letter, and I never told them I was quitting.

I originally filed my UIA claim as a layoff because my employer told me my last day would be at the end of May since there was no more work available in Michigan.

However, when I spoke with a UIA representative today, they said this would actually be considered a voluntary quit because I declined the opportunity to continue working in Arizona. They said they were going to amend my claim to show "quit" and send fact-finding questions to me and send questions to my employer.

(One thing I'm really worried about is what happens if my employer gives a different version of events or simply doesn't respond to UIA because they're too busy.)

Does declining a temporary relocation automatically make it a voluntary quit, even if your employer told you there was no more work in your original location and you never resigned?

I'd really appreciate hearing from anyone who has gone through this or knows how Michigan UIA usually handles situations like this.I was laid off/terminated at the end of May and should have started receiving unemployment benefits around June 1, but it's already June 29 and I still haven't received anything.

[Michigan] - UIA Protest changed from "Issued 1" to "Issued 2" but no determination letter. What should I do?

Hi everyone,

I'm new to Michigan UIA, and I'm honestly feeling overwhelmed. I'm hoping someone who has been through a similar situation can give me some advice.

I was laid off around June 1, so I've been certifying every two weeks and completing my work search as required.

The problem is that I misunderstood the Michigan Works! registration requirement. I created my Michigan Works account before the deadline, but I didn't realize that I also had to go in person to the Michigan Works office to complete the registration. I thought that creating the account, certifying every two weeks, and completing my work searches were all I needed to do.

I only realized I had missed something when UIA sent me a Fact Finding questionnaire asking me to upload proof of completed Michigan Works registration. As soon as I understood the issue, I went to the Michigan Works office and completed the registration immediately, but it was already about two weeks past the deadline.

Around June 18, UIA issued a determination (Issued 1), so I filed a protest explaining that I was unaware of the in-person registration requirement.

Today (June 29), my protest status changed from Issued 1 to Issued 2, and now MiWAM says I can file an appeal. However, I have not received any determination letter, correspondence, or message at all explaining what happened or why it changed.

I tried calling UIA several times today, but every time I get the "heavy call volume" message and can't get through.

To make things even more confusing, I also have an "Additional Information Required - Reopen Claim" alert. I'm afraid to reopen my claim because I don't know if it could affect my protest or appeal while this issue is still unresolved.

As of today (June 29), I still haven't received any unemployment benefits, even though I've been unemployed since around June 1. I'm really worried that because of my mistake and misunderstanding of the registration requirement, I could lose all of my benefits.

Has anyone experienced something similar?

Any advice or similar experiences would mean a lot. Thank you.
