r/Unemployment

[Texas] I recently was unjustly fired from an old job, and was just laid off after 2 months at my new one.

I received a very small benefit amount from the 1st job where i was fired. Only $100 due to me returning to work so quickly. Am i able to also file for this job where i was just laid off? Or is it only one single time per year because if so I really screwed myself by claiming that 1st one. I did it as soon as i got home from getting fired so I didn't know I'd land a job that same week. Any help would be appreciated

[Washington] turning down job interviews.

A friend of mine is receiving unemployment benefits and recently turned down a job offer. John basically has a seasonal job that starts up again in a few days and the job was kinda shitty- he mostly applied for it because he figured he would not receive a callback to meet the job search requirement.

Does turning down a job interview count as turning down a job offer and does John have to report it to the unemployment office?

[South Carolina] Remaining benefits from old claims

I was unemployed during height of COVID and was collecting benefits from two companies. The first one was a start up that went bust and I’d never filed for unemployment but then when I was laid off from another company during the pandemic I file for both. I never used all those benefits. Now I’m unemployed again (new claim) and benefits will run out soon. Am I still entitled to the remaining money I never used from those first two claims?

[New York] Physical and Documented start date different

Got laid off from a job in February, claimed unemployment. Went through getting benefits, been claiming as directed weekly, job searching and keeping all apply/rejection emails.

I got an offer for a job 2 weeks ago. It is a part time per diem role with no guaranteed hours( I am a full time student). I accepted the role but due to my school, me being out of the country for a period of time and the employer already having a filled schedule for the schedule period, the employer stated I could start working on 7/6, which is the first day of the new schedule although on paper, my official start date is first week of May.

Went to claim unemployment for this week (week ending 5/17/26) and got a notification that they have “info I’ve been working” and I was required to fill out a form before claiming benefits. Went to fill it out and the form was not submitting for me due to an error in the phone number (could not figure out the issue) and there is no way for me to accurately show what I said above. I also was unable to claim this week’s benefits due to this.

Should I call the office and explain? I don’t want to be forced to pay anything back or be denied future payments because of a situation like this. Advice appreciated

[Massachusetts] pending?

My unemployment claim was made 4/26/2026. I went on unemployment because I am a full time student now Mon-Fri 8am-2:30pm. On the website it writes “The claim has been deemed monetarily eligible.” It also reads that my employment history and work availability is in progress (at first it said pending but it changed to in progress last week). They marked my waiting week as 5/2/2026 and I have put in claims for the week of 5/9/26 and 5/16/2026. I have emailed my state rep and they let me know they notified the unemployment office and they would reach out to me soon. A few hours after that email they called and asked me what my school schedule is and if i am able to work during school. I am unsure if this will take any longer but I was wondering if anyone else has had the same experience. I am also unsure how long I should expect my first check.

[Michigan] Process in Michigan - Misconduct Violation of Policy

I was fired from my job today. Apparently I called my new director a “dictator” and that violates company policy. Haven’t received a warning or anything prior. When doing the application I did select “violation of Policy” as a reason, and I understand this may disqualify me to receive any benefit. It is currently in progress on the website and I’m wondering how long does the initial process take and whether I am doomed from the violation of policy. I do not necessarily recall the time that it happened, but I’m not saying I didn’t do it. But regardless will this “simple” act of freedom of speech really disqualify me from unemployment? I haven’t been without a job for many many years and have never collected unemployment before. I’m lost and started to look for positions, but this benefit would allow some food on the table in the meantime. Do I have to wait for this investigation before receiving anything?

Thank you so much!

[Pennsylvania] Nervous to submit withdraw for signing reason.

I filed for unemployment because I believed I wouldn't get a summer job due to personal reasons, but I managed to land one almost immediately. I'd rather do that now than the unemployment.

I have the two pages printed out, and I am a little confused on one part, and I am nervous I may get in trouble, so I do not want any issues. Where I have signed my name and date, there are two sections under it where I do not know what to do. The first section says, "Information provided by telephone to UC representative: (Initials)." The second section literally just says, "On:"

I do not have a clue what to do with this information. Can I leave it blank, or am I required to fill it in. The paper says a lot about punishment for false statements, so I want to make sure that I don't mess anything up.

[California] Employer question about unemployment for employee who only worked a few days.

I’m a small business owner in California. I hired someone who worked 21 hours. I let her go when it was clear she wasn’t able to do the job. She filed for unemployment and was approved because she wasn’t let go for willful misconduct. Will I have to pay unemployment for her? I have no problem paying unemployment? I’ve helped employees with the process in the past. But it seems like a stretch to pay unemployment for someone who barely worked.

[michigan] after certifying, why does it say my benefit is $0?

This is exactly what it said “Your certification has been accepted for the week-ending 5/9/2026. Based on deductions, your benefit payment amount is zero.”

Reduction in hours and direct care providers unemployment questions [Oregon]

Warning: Complicated employment situation involving multiple parties but unfortunately, it's not an uncommon situation (especially with recent Medicaid cuts,) so this could be helpful for others.

Three of my family members are paid live-in direct care professionals (DSP) for two other adult family members (clients) with severe IDD (receive 24/7 care under Medicaid.) They've worked for the same agency for more than 6 years, receive full benefits and significant overtime—25 to 30 hrs/week. Client 1 is moving into a nearby group home in 2-4 weeks. Two DSPs (A, B) have only worked for this client, but are approved for both to fill in during vacations/illness if needed. The third DSP (C) works for both clients. The remaining client(2) has two other DSPs, one who is planning on leaving mid-July, and that will create an opening for another DSP.

So in 2-4 weeks, two of the DSPs will lose all their hours, and the third will have their hours reduced by 60%. Normally, they would just go to the agency and see if they could pick up new clients. This is where is gets complicated.

  • A doesn't drive, even though it is a requirement for the agency; they were granted an exemption because they either only work overnight or as a 2:1 with another (driving) 1:1 DSP, and the client approved. DSP is early 20s and a part-time college student.
  • B, while generally healthy, is over 70 (they are the clients' parent.)
  • C's part-time schedule with client 2 will make them less appealing to other clients.
  • A and C planned a vacation months ago—beginning mid-June for 3 weeks. B will fill in for C's part-time hours with client 2.
  • From mid-July on, B will likely have no hours other than filling in unplanned absences or for two vacations (in Sep and Oct.) C will be full-time w/ client 2, A will still be part-time.

The agency doesn't participate in Work Share. Can any of these employees get unemployment if the agency cannot find temporary clients during the weeks they are available? Will they be required to look for employment with other DSP agencies? C in particular is overqualified for this work (multiple advanced degrees in another field) and only did the work because the agency couldn't find anyone during Covid; they would like to look for work in their field, including starting their own business.

Thanks for any help this community can provide.

[Georgia] SSDI and Unemployment

My SSDI benefits restarted after I had applied and been approved for Unemployment. I also claimed that I had a disability on the unemployment application. Will receiving SSDI impact my weekly unemployment benefits? The weekly statement to receive payment asks if I worked or earned wages.

[Virginia] What's the likelihood I can continue receiving benefits if I decline my old job back due to mental and physical health?

I lost my warehouse job due to a lay off, now I'm hearing rumors of the company bringing back all of the people they laid off. The job was very physically demanding on my body, some of the heavy lifting I could not perform, the job also caused a lot of mental stress to the point where I had trouble focusing on my work, constant mistakes and poor quality products being assembled on my behalf. I currently work part time retail, a job that I can still perform well in. With all being said, what's the likelihood of me being able to recieve benefits if I refuse my old job back?

[Mississippi] weight master considered suitable work ?

I plan to preserve my role within my current role which is a typical gaurd who monitors gate, log trucks temperature and fuel, etc. recently, I have been subjected to conditions that’s unbearable so I was offered weight master role or I can quit. ( I have all documentation and evidence for my good cause that I won’t list)

The letter said:
Position: “Scales”
• Classification “remains the same as current” it’s not per post orders and classification it’s “weight master”
• Benefits remain the same (not detailed)
• Pay and schedule listed
• But no actual duties were described (detailed)

The effective date was May 29 (or sooner depending on backfill availability for my current post). The position at Scales was already open/empty, yet they still made it conditional on hiring my replacement first. effective date was May 29 (or sooner depending on backfill availability for my current post). The position at Scales was already open/empty, yet they still made it conditional on hiring my replacement first.

In my opinion this offer was not suitable or available because:

• Weight Master is a completely different job (regulated scale operation, axle-by-axle weighing, filling USDA/Packers & Stockyards forms, federal liability for inaccurate weights under OMB 0580-0015). I have zero training or experience in it, and I never signed the required Weigher’s Acknowledgement that others did.
• It removes me entirely from gate/access control duties — no badges, no gate arm, no ISN check-ins. It’s a new field not similer occupation that comes certification in compliance with the law that I’m not certified or train for
• The offer was vague and didn’t disclose the real duties or federal risks, while mentioning I am trained despite I have my entire training file which I am not and he (HR) stated it as well prior.
• It wasn’t immediately available due to the backfill contingency.
I chose to quit rather than sign something unclear that didn’t preserve my current role.
I have strong documentation on everything (post orders showing two different roles, training records showing I wasn’t trained, my preservation attempts, disciplinary notices, etc.).

TL;DR:
Employer offered a vague, conditional transfer to a completely different Weight Master role (no training, federal liability, different duties/job code) instead of fixing bad conditions in my gate guard position. Is this considered a valid/suitable/available offer that should disqualify me from MDES unemployment in Mississippi? Or do I have strong grounds on appeal to argue unsuitable + not available + good cause?

[New York] Why are people so obsessed with what “unemployed” people do all day? Like what do you do? Develop blood clots at a desk? Stare at a screen until your eyes run out of saliva?

I find it so boring of a conversation starter. Why is this the eternal question? Yes I’m unemployed but financially solvent. Why do I need a desk job to satisfy your musings of me throughout the day. Sometimes I enjoy the comfort of my home. I just find it fundamentally questionable for someone to make an off color remark thinking themselves cheeky as “I just picture you on the couch all day.” Again why? Why because I’m not pushing pencils answering to some crotch scratching moron all day do you envision me “wasting away” on the couch. Also what if I am? I love my home and I love my couch and cuddling with my dog and reading my books and cooking and luxuriating. I just feel like I’m made out to be a lame horse for not curing cancer like the rest of the corporate zombies of the world. If I said “I went to the park with my dog today and grabbed a coffee” it would be met with a pitiful “oh alright.” And don’t get me started on the most tired conversational standby of all “what do you do [for a living]?” Lol I made some good trades and now I’m chilling. Next question?

[New York] voluntarily resigning disqualify you if the job offer is vague and backfilled ?

Does a job transfer offer still count as a valid available“suitable work” offer for unemployment purposes if:

the start date is delayed or depends on staffing/backfill, and
the duties differ from the employee’s current role (different classification/tasks), and
the offer is internal (same employer)?

In general, what makes a job offer “valid” or “bona fide” for unemployment purposes — does it need to be immediately available and fully defined, or can conditional/delayed offers still count?

I am resigning voluntarily due to my conditions I was subjected to at my employment.

The longer I don’t have a job the more anxious I get

I’ve been without a job for a little over a month now and it’s really been getting to me. My finacé won’t be able to really put any money to rent, because of fees and everything, we owe about 800 for. And he’ll only be getting 400-something because of some bad luck and needing to take mine out at times to save ourselves. And our internet was just shut off yesterday. I’m slowly running out of food: into my last frozen pizza and really I’m so scared. I don’t want to be evicted but I don’t think we’re gonna be able to save ourselves this time. I’ve been trying to unbelievably hard to stay positive and believe things will be okay but I’m not sure anymore. I’m scared and I know I probably won’t get any, but I need help. We don’t have a car so that cuts all of my options in less than half. I’m on like 4 rejections already and I’m getting to the jobs that pay 9/hr. I just really want someone to help me. I really don’t want to be homeless again…

[Texas] Unemployment Claim Denied after Layoff because of Severance Payment?

I was laid off April 10th in Texas.

I was given a severance package and had to sign a termination agreement. It was a company wide restructuring.

Texas's unemployment office called me yesterday asking questions about my claim. They asked if I received any final funds. I confirmed I was given a severance with my PTO and 3 months of salary as my job was outsourced to India.

Today I got a letter for Texas stating 1 am disqualified for unemployment because I received a severance payment.

Anyone have any advice or help?

The Exact Writing:

Decision: We cannot pay you benefits for the period below.

Reason for Decision: The additional payment you received from your last employer disqualifies you.

[Connecticut] Unsure how to resolve my UI situation. Receiving contradictory information and getting nowhere.

I was recently let go from a job as a contractor through a staffing agency. Since the seperation resulted in my contracted being ended with the client the staffing agency was working with, I was told that I could file under "lack of work" since my contract was ended.

Weeks later, I discover my UI claim is held up due to Issue on File. After reaching out and speaking with the DOL, I was told that they reached out to my most recent employer, and they replied with stating that I was still employed with them full-time. Obviously, this is not correct because my last workday was 4/17.

I've been unable to reach HR directly, I finally got hold of Payroll dept, and the person I spoke with stated that they did not receive any correspondance from the DOL. The information I'm being told is contradictory to what was told to me directly by the DOL representative.

At this time, I do not know what to do because it feels like the previous employer is not cooperating and I'm now stuck in a loop because both sides are contradicting the given information about my situation.

I figured that the best solution would be to request a letter of proof of seperation from HR to then forward to the DoL adjucations dept with the last date of employment. However, HR has either been unreachable, or seem to be giving me the run around. To further complicate things, the automated system provided a number for employment verification that is incorrect - I called the number and it turns out to be a contact for an Auto Parts Dealer.

I need some advice on how to proceed here since the employer does not seem to be cooperating or has any reliable channels of communication.

The worse possible scenario seems to be that the adjucations dept, will have to conduct an investigation that will take 4 to 6 weeks in which that time I will not be receiving any benefits.

[Pennsylvania] Do i have a claim, Job hired me under false pretenses

TLDR: can i be accepted for unemployment if job offered me employment for overnight shifts for a few months but employee has yet to come back so i can switch over to daytime shifts. / do i have any other options like medical wise.

Some context to the job.. I had originally applied to be a regular worker at this company but because of my experience they decided to offer me a supervisor role which I had accepted with the guarantee I’d be switched over to daytime while still retaining the supervisor role in around a month.

Reason why position needed to be filled: Both overnight supervisors were away on medical leave, leaving only the daytime supervisors having to work their shifts for the time being until I came by.

After accepting the position I then got an email stating it would now be 2-4 months until the overnight supervisors would return. Which at first was weird but I paid no mind to it since I was still under the assumption that it wouldn’t take longer than a month. I had also informed them early on I had other responsibilities such as school and that it was important that I don’t remain in this overnight position as long because of how demanding school currently is for me.

Current situation: Its now been around 3 months and the 2nd supervisor has yet to come and keeps pushing his come back date further and further. I feel I’ve been very patient with them and I’ve grown tired of having to work these overnight shifts so much so that they’ve been affecting my productivity/ grades in class and because I’m so exhausted all the time I can barely focus and don’t get much sleep throughout the week. Now I’ve spoken to them already about any solutions to this and every answer is just basically that I’m stuck in the overnight role until the dudes back or I can give up the position and work as a regular worker which to me is something I really would like to avoid doing since the day would be docked by a lot. i’m not given much of an option besides stay and deal with it or choose to be demoted.

Unemployment question: I’m to the point where I’d rather quit and receive unemployment so I can focus completely on school while still gathering some kind of income for a bit until I graduate. Do I have any ground to leave and try to report for unemployment due to I guess false pretenses? Or possibly anything else i can report or am I just going to be denied.. I really need some help with this because it’s really getting to me and I’d really appreciate the help.

keep in mind i’ve been having to leave for medical reasons as well. which i haven’t communicated to them due to the fact that they don’t accept excuse notes so i didn’t see the point of even brining it up in the first place but i have a paper trail if needed.

If you have any questions so you can answer my question more thoroughly I’ll try to answer as detailed as I can.
