Is it normal for your spouse to be private about money?

Hi everyone, I’d like to get some outside opinions because I’m not sure if I’m overthinking this.

I’ve been married for a year, and my husband and I were together for five years before getting married. We’re generally very close and talk about almost everything. Money was never really a problem before marriage either. We talked about who would pay for what, and even during our wedding preparations, we managed the expenses pretty fairly between us.

I work and I’m financially independent. My husband is currently a med student, and has a stable income from his family. We’re doing fine financially and we own a house together.

But since getting married, I’ve noticed that he really avoids talking about money when it comes to the future. I don’t really know what we should be saving, what kind of budget we should have for vacations or bigger things, or even generally what our financial situation looks like.

I’ve tried talking about it a few times, but he usually changes the subject or gets defensive. He says that he doesn’t know what the future will look like and prefers to deal with things when they actually happen.

I’m not trying to control his money or know everything he spends. I just feel that as a married couple, we should be able to have a basic conversation about our finances and future plans.

So I’d really like to hear from you. : How open are you with your spouse about money? Is this kind of privacy normal, or should I be concerned?
