Nainital trip advice needed
Hi everyone! My family of 5 (my parents, me and my two sisters) is planning a short trip to Nainital on 26–27 August. We’ll be travelling by train from Delhi to Kathgodam.
This is our first time in Nainital, so I’d really appreciate some advice from locals/recent visitors.
Our hotel budget is very strict — around ₹1,000–1,200 per room per night. We’re not looking for anything fancy, just something clean, safe and reasonably accessible.
The main problem is that we’re travelling during monsoon, so there’s a possibility that we may have to cancel if the rain/road conditions are bad. Because of that, I’m hesitant to book something expensive or non-refundable.
I contacted Prerna Residency in Bhimtal, and they offered one room for all 5 of us for ₹1,500 total, with an extra mattress. That sounds like a great deal, but I’m confused about whether staying in Bhimtal makes sense when we only have one night.
So I’d love advice on:
- Bhimtal vs Nainital for a 1-night trip — which would you choose?
- How easy and affordable is transport from Bhimtal → Nainital, especially for 5 people?
- What would be the cheapest way to get from Kathgodam → Bhimtal/Nainital?
- If staying in Nainital, is Mallital or Tallital better for our budget and for sightseeing? We mainly want to see Naini Lake, Mall Road, Naina Devi Temple and maybe Snow View/Zoo if the weather permits.
- Which areas should we look for budget hotels in? We don't mind walking a little, but don't want to be completely isolated.
- What are the best affordable places to eat in Nainital? We're more interested in good local food than fancy cafés.
- What are the must-do things in Nainital for a first-time visitor with parents, considering we only have roughly 1 day?
- Most importantly, how risky is travelling around Nainital/Bhimtal in late August during monsoon? Should we keep the hotel completely flexible and decide closer to the date?
We’re trying to keep the whole trip affordable, so budget/local recommendations would be especially helpful.
Also, if anyone has stayed around Bhimtal recently, I’d really appreciate honest opinions about the area and transport. Thank you! 🙏
