Reddit is honestly one of the least trustworthy social media sites
I'm convinced Reddit is one of the least trustworthy social media platforms, and I don't understand why people constantly act like it's some gold standard of information.
Almost everyone is anonymous, so people can confidently make things up with zero consequences. Half the time you have no idea whether you're reading advice from an actual professional or a 15-year-old who just sounds convincing.
What's even worse is that actual experts often can't even participate because they don't have enough karma or their account is too new. Meanwhile, people who've spent years farming karma get treated like authorities just because they've been around longer.
The karma system is awful. It encourages people to rush to be the first reply instead of the most accurate one, because the first comment gets the visibility and the upvotes. Once a wrong answer gets enough momentum, good luck correcting it.
Then there are the echo chambers. Every subreddit develops its own approved opinions, and if you disagree -- even politely -- you get buried in downvotes. People end up self-censoring because they don't want to lose karma, so every community slowly becomes a bubble where everyone repeats the same opinions.
And don't even get me started on the fake stories. Karma is literally internet points people chase, so of course some users exaggerate or completely invent experiences because they know it'll get attention.
Reddit is great for hobbies and niche communities. But people seriously need to stop pretending it's a reliable source of information.
