Hi all !

I'm an incoming PhD student and I'm starting to look at housing options. I am wondering what people typically go for/about how much money they usually pay, considering the stipend amounts.

I am from a very low COL area (my rent right now is 350CAD...) so I am not used to rent being such a big portion of income. I am not quite sure what I will realistically be able to afford with the stipend.

The base funding (garanteed for 5 years) is of 42k minus tuition, and I can get a top-off of 4-5k from CGS-M/D. I am also interested in doing some TAing, although that will depend on if my supervisor allows it.

I've found a nice 1 bedroom basement unit pretty close to campus for about 1600$/month. I feel like that would be reasonable with this kind of income ? I could very easily walk everywhere, so no transportation costs, leaves me a decent chunk per week for food and other things.

What do you think ? What can you afford with your stipend ?
