How do I handle modifying the party's memories?

So I'm planning to run a campaign for some of my friends and had a cool idea for the first arc:

Long before the campaign starts, the party very nearly defeated the BBEG. Right before he was about to die, he managed to create a 'Truman Show'-esque fake kingdom, wiped the party's memories of him, and trapped them inside.

Fast forward a few years, the party is essentially doing typical low-stakes D&D adventures inside this kingdom but start to figure out something's wrong. They discover that the place is fake, break out, and start looking for the guy that put them their.

At some point either just before they break out or a bit later, I want their to be a big moment where the party gets their old memories back and realise a lot of what they thought they knew was planted their by the BBEG to keep them docile.

So here's the actual problem: I still want my player's to have the agency to write their own backstories, but I know that even if I tell them to act like they don't remember, the meta-knowledge that their backstory is being withheld will likely have an impact on how they play. How do I let them keep that agency without letting them know that something is wrong?

My current idea is to ask them to rewrite their backstory at the pivotal moment, but I'm worried they may not appreciate that if they've grown attached to the "fake" story.

Any ideas? Or should I just be upfront and hope they're able to stay in character and not accidentally meta-game?

Is there a way to convert this curve into a solid mesh similar to the 2nd image? Aka. using the curve as a cross-section for a blobby 3D shape.

Basically, I want the curve to act as the silhouette, which then is given volume on the z-axis based on how "wide" that part of the shape is. I suspect geometry nodes are involved but I am not experienced enough to know how.

Also, I really just want the end result. The curve is just a guess, but if there's an easier way please let me know.

Edit: Solution found! The easiest method seems to be the following:

  1. Turn it into a plane and extrude a little bit
  2. Create a highly subdivided plane and extrude that, but no thicker than the shape
  3. Set the plane to bool intersect with the shape and apply
  4. Set a face set that includes everything except the outermost vertices
  5. Use cloth filter inflate brush across entire mesh
  6. Lower brush strength and smooth cloth creases
