Starting a Modified Sinnoh Nuzlocke

After finishing all the other regions, I've decided that Sinnoh will finally be my Nuzlocke region. However, because PokeMMO can be brutally difficult at times, I'm using some custom rules to keep the challenge fun instead of turning it into pure suffering.

Rules

  • The Nuzlocke starts when I get Poké Balls.
  • Dupes Clause by evolution line: if I catch a Pokémon from an evolution line, I can't catch any of its evolutions or pre-evolutions later.
  • Only 1 Pokémon per route/area.
  • Every Pokémon must come from a different route.
  • Fainted Pokémon are boxed forever.
  • Every Pokémon must have a nickname.
  • No TMs allowed.
  • Set mode (which is already the default in PokeMMO).
  • Healing items are allowed in battle, but only the limited amount allowed by important battles (usually 4), and I can only use items that I find on the ground. No buying healing items.
  • No buying items from the GTL, including evolution items, just exp candys.
  • Gift Pokémon are allowed only if they're obtained in a new area.

Special Rules Because of PokeMMO's Difficulty

  • Every 2 gyms, I can open one Mystery Ball:
    • After Gym 2: Poké Ball
    • After Gym 4: Great Ball
    • After Gym 6: Ultra Ball
    • After Gym 8: Dusk Ball

I can use the Pokémon I get from it as long as it doesn't break the current level cap.

  • The level cap is simply whatever PokeMMO sets.
  • Raid boss battles do not count. This includes fights like:
    • Ho-Oh in Johto
    • Red Gyarados
    • Giratina in Sinnoh

Those fights can absolutely destroy runs, and this challenge is supposed to be a different way to play the regions, not torture myself.

  • A wipe is not Game Over.
  • The run only ends if:
    1. I completely run out of Pokémon, or
    2. I decide to give up.

The only thing I'm still unsure about is the Elite Four. Since PokeMMO automatically heals you between battles, what rules would you suggest to keep the E4 challenging but fair?

I'd love to hear your ideas and whether these rules sound balanced or if I'm making things too easy or too hard.

I just finished a Grass monotype run through Hoenn in PokeMMO, and honestly, it was one of the most difficult but also one of the most fun and satisfying challenges I've done.

The rules were pretty simple:

  • I could only use Grass-type Pokémon.
  • I couldn't buy Pokémon from the GTL, unless there were literally no obtainable options available in the region at that point.
  • Everything else had to be caught and raised during the playthrough.

Some fights that are normally easy became complete nightmares, and I had to use strategies and Pokémon that I would usually never consider. It really made me appreciate how different the game feels when you're limited to a single type.

And I have to say it:

Roserade is absolutely the GOAT. 🌹🐐

That thing carried so many important battles and Tropius was there just because of fly lol

Looking for fun ways to replay regions on secondary characters

I have one main character with everything completed, but I also have two secondary characters that only have Kanto finished.

I wanted to make replaying the remaining regions more interesting, so I recently tried doing a Locke challenge... and wow, PokeMMO humbled me quickly.

Between the modified bosses, the Red Gyarados fight, the elite four, and knowing what's coming with the Ho-Oh raid battle, I realized that a full Locke in PokeMMO is way harder than I expected.

So now I'm looking for other ideas to make replaying regions feel fresh without just doing the same normal playthrough again.

What challenges or self-imposed rules do you use on secondary characters?

Some ideas I've thought about:

  • Monotype runs
  • Wheel Challenge (random restrictions after each badge)
  • Theme teams
  • Region-only Pokémon

I'd also love ideas that make progressing through the regions more interesting while still feeling different from a standard playthrough.

What do you guys do on your alts?

Starting My First PokeMMO Locke Today

After thinking about it for a while and getting some advice from this subreddit, I've decided to start my first PokeMMO Locke challenge today.

Since PokeMMO is harder than the original games, I'm going with a slightly modified ruleset:

  • First encounter per route only.
  • Permanent death (fainted Pokémon must be boxed forever).
  • Dupes Clause.
  • All Pokémon must be nicknamed.
  • 1 GTL purchase per Gym Badge earned (the Pokémon must be from a route/area I haven't encountered yet).
  • If I get completely wiped out, I don't restart the run. I can continue using any surviving Pokémon in my PC.

My goal isn't to create the hardest challenge possible, but to make the adventure feel unique and memorable while still keeping the tension of a Locke run.

I'll be starting in Johto cuz i beated Kanto in all my characters and I'll probably post updates if anything funny, tragic, or legendary happens.

Wish me luck. I'm sure future me is already mourning a Pokémon that hasn't died yet.

I want to start a Nuzlocke

Hey everyone,

I'm thinking about starting a PokeMMO Locke challenge on a new character, but I'm looking for ways to make it as fun and memorable as possible.

For those of you who have done Locke/Nuzlocke-style runs in PokeMMO:

  • What rules did you use?
  • Did you make any custom rules to keep things interesting?
  • Which region was the most fun for a Locke?
  • Any stories of painful losses, unexpected MVPs, or memorable moments?
  • What are some mistakes you wish you had avoided?

I already have a main character with most content completed, so the goal isn't efficiency or progression—it's having a unique adventure that feels different from a normal playthrough. Well actually, completing the others characters helps to make me rich heehehehe.

I'd love to hear your experiences, recommendations, and any ideas that could make the run more exciting.

Thanks!
