There was an incident this week at my school, where there was a robbery at a local establishment, and a subsequent police pursuit where the perpetrator tried to run into the school. He was shot in the baseball field just a minute before reaching the back door of the building. It was complete mayhem, as this unfortunately happened during lunchtime. I had to hide under my desk for an hour and a half with a pair of scissors. Students were crying, backpacks and belongings dropped everywhere, the whole nine yards.

What shocked me most of all wasn’t the event itself, but the reaction to it. We were told to come in the next day and go on, business as usual. I am still trying to process it, but I am coming to the very real realization that we are defenseless sitting ducks. They can say whatever they like, but schools are targets, and flooding guns into communities when there is a mental health crisis is a travesty. Airports, politicians, court houses, sporting events all get adequate security, we just get exposed. Teachers need to go on a nationwide strike until there is adequate gun control and hardened schools. Every teacher in America needs to go into transition until this isn’t a normal part of school life.
