Is it realistic to have an heirloom diamond resized and appraised without letting it out of our sight?

My fiance recently proposed with a beautiful family heirloom ring! The diamond is over 100 years old and has a long family history. the ring has only been reset once in its lifetime, and we still have the original band and setting.

the issue we are running into is that I need the ring resized, and we’d also like to have the diamond appraised for insurance purposes. his family however, has specifically requested that we never let the diamond out of our sight.

we have visited multiple jewelers, but none have been able to remove the diamond from its setting while we wait so that we can take the stone home and leave the band for resizing. we also haven’t been able to find an appraiser who can examine the diamond while we’re present.

admittedly I am not a jewelry expert, so I’m trying to figure out whether this is even a realistic request. I imagine that in the past, it may have been more common for jewelers to remove stones or perform appraisals onsite? but idk if that’s still standard practice.

is it possible to have a diamond removed from its setting while you watch, or to have an appraisal performed in your presence? Are there particular types of jewelers or appraisers we should be looking for?

we really want to honor his family’s wishes, especially given the sentimental value and history of the diamond, but we’re struggling to figure out how to make that happen.

Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
