It took me criminally late Into my RTW career to realise that the patches of dark land were in fact caused by enemy armies rampaging around. Maybe its on account of my dreadful eyesight, but i never noticed the black blobs or devastation on the map for about 20 YEARS. Whether you have a watchtower or not you can see devastation on the map.

For those who may not know, an enemy standing on your road hinders income. Ive never bothered to figure out what income or how much, but i think its a similar effect to the port blockade. If they stand on or near farms, they also dont produce as much benefit. In the late game it doesnt matter, but in early game a few hundred denarii does count. Moreover, you know an approximate location of the rebel army (if they are stood on something they can rob) because of the black blob. No more pesky ambushed for them!
