Waymo Testing in Malden

I spotted one of the distinctive Waymo Jaguars on Woodland road this morning. It had a driver and passenger on this occasion. Given Waymo's reason for existing, driverless taxis, that is likely only a temporary condition.

If we haven't already started the discussions about the licensing, insurance, and law-enforcement implications of Waymo's operations in Malden and beyond to Massachusetts, we almost certainly should.

I know Counsellors Linehan and MacDonald are both active here, hoping they see this and can start the dialog and updates as appropriate.

Moxie Pest Control - Canvassing - Apparently without City Required Permit

just had a Moxie Pest Control Canvasser ring the doorbell near Fellsway and East Border, his company ID was not visible as required by the city canvassing ordinance, likely means they have not paid their canvassing permit fee or obtained their permit.

Malden PD have been called, but one complaint makes it hard for them to find and fine Moxie.

In an economy where the city needs revenue to balance budgets it is especially egregious for out-of-town for-profit businesses to cut corners and steal permitting fees the city is lawfully entitled to, especially when the lost revenue from those fees will likely be extracted from residents.

Call Malden PD when you see them on your street if you agree.

Heat Pump Sizing - Electrification Projects

I'm working on some high level concepts for building electrification.

Buildings are primarily in the Northeastern US. Block load calculations often indicate that heat loss is the driving factor for nominal heat pump tonnage rather than cooling load. This feel right since the buildings are low occupancy, low glazing area which will drive down cooling tonnage in cold climates (IECC zones 5 and 6).

What strategy are most of you using to address this condition?

  1. Selecting tonnage for cooling load an providing supplemental heat?
  2. Selecting tonnage for heating load and living with having far more tons than needed for cooling?
  3. Somewhere in between?
