Illegal use of utility poles for hanging campaign signs

I have been on the phone with City Hall for the last 2 days, over reports and pictures coming to me, with local candidates posting their campaign signs on utility poles, which is illegal. The area that I have heard about are about 10 poles in the Midway area, and 1 right outside of Citracado Dental, on El Norte Parkway. There have been 4 local candidates who the city admitted were in violation and have taken down the signs. Those in violation of the law were Escondido Mayor Dane White, Escondido Deputy Mayor Joe Garcia, candidate for City Council Tanner Horsely, and David Vincent for School Board. The 2 city staffers who I spoke with were very helpful and knowledgeable. They told me that each of the candidates was given a handbook that outlined all of the rules, but that they pay people to put up their signs, so the people putting them up probably weren't aware of the rules. I said, "Yes, I agree with you, 100 percent! However, I find it disappointing and disrespectful that all of these individuals are seeking election to higher office, and 2 of those individuals have sat on our dais for the last 4 years, but none of them bothered to hold themselves to a higher standard, and follow the laws for our local elections. What statement does that make about how they conduct themselves as a local official?" The city staffers, who had common sense, agreed with me! If you see any signs on utility poles in Escondido, please comment here on the location, the candidate's names, and then report them immediately. You can call code compliance at Escondido City Hall directly, or you can try this number that they gave me: 760-839-4650.

Kit Carson Park ice rink proposal

Hey there! If anyone here considers themselves to be a Friend of Kit Carson Park in South Escondido, this post is for you! If you haven't heard, a Billionaire who was indicated on false testimony is proposing a 16-acre multi-sheet ice complex, parking lot for 400 vehicles, restaurant, and retail space within the peaceful confines of our beautiful Kit Carson Park. Although this had been in the works for 3 years, behind-the-scenes, citizens who attended the City Council meeting 2 weeks ago were just hit with the news. The City has entered into an MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) with the Rinks Foundation of Irvine, and the city is pushing this project through at warp speed, planning to vote on it in 2 weeks from now! Irvine has a similar structure (not in a park), and their citizens were allowed to vote on it. We will not be allowed to vote on this project. All of the safety, traffic, environmental, etc. reports will not be done until AFTER the vote is taken, and the city is limiting public comment on this topic.

I must say that I've lived and worked in Escondido for 40 years in the area that this proposal would affect, and as a mom and a teacher I'm all for it. However, I just happen to know that Kit Carson Park would not be the best location for this project for many reasons. I've been reading the Master and General Plans, as well as the Subarea Reports and the North County Multiple Species Conservation Program, and there is a strong vision for keeping the park as it was initially designed: As a Nature Park. There are already sports such as softball, disc golf, and tennis there, as well as playgrounds and a beautiful and unique piece of public art, known as Queen Califia's Magical Garden, created by a well known international Artist.

The small area also already has too much traffic and noise from the 4 schools, 2 churches, Amphitheatre, and Fire Station that create gridlock almost every day. The nearby Fire Station uses the parking lot as a staging area for all fire trucks and equipment when there is an emergency. There are protected and endangered species on the riparian back trails, to name just a few reasons why this is a less than ideal location. Please visit the Friends of Escondido Facebook page, "Friends of Kit Carson Park" for photos, maps, plans, and more details. Please come to the City Council meeting on 6/17 at 5 pm and speak out against this location, if you feel so moved, and/or contact your City Council representatives and Mayor to let them know your thoughts and feelings about this ill-conceived project. This land is valued at $17M, but some things are NOT FOR SALE. Keep Kit Carson Park green for current and future generations!!💚💚💚
