Did he have to sell his truck to give the money towards the mission trip? Or do they have to sell all worldly possessions?

Sam’s mission trip
Can someone explain to me how this mission trip will be hard on Sam? It’s in SC for goodness sake. Is he cut off from the family funds and that’s why it’s hard?
