Court notices

I can’t be the only one that will receive a court notice that explicitly says “Administrative- No Appearance Required” or “No Appearance. On the Papers” and my attorney is adamant that I need to call the court and confirm.

The notice can say “in person, court room 149) or via zoom link and the zoom link is right there for them to use, and I’m still instructed to call and confirm.

And yeah I call, but I have never had a moment where the instructions didn’t already match what the clerk was going to tell me.

The only time it makes sense for me to reach out to the court is when the notice says reach out for appearance details.

Is this just an anxious attorney habit or should I be more cautious with these notices?

Stealing and lying when you could have just asked

I’m beyond frustrated and angry at my brother. He’s a 28 year old loser who has not had a steady job his entire adult life. He’s a mooch, a druggy, and a piece of shit human being.

My entire life with him has been a nightmare. He’s grown up always stealing from me and breaking into my room. Selling my clothes and personal belongings. He will steal just to get a can of soda from the corner store.

He’s broken into my room so many times that it doesn’t matter how many times I change the locks or reinforce the door or change the door, he finds his way in. I could leave my room to go into the bath room to brush my teeth, he’s using that opportunity to go into.

I could lock the door every second I step out of my room, he will eventually break the door or the lock. The worst part of it is he lies about doing it, in a weird way to try to gas light me.

He is a really envious and jealous person and when he gets in those feelings, I know he’s going after my stuff. He use to go after me, until I pepper sprayed his ass.

Catching him on camera isn’t a deterrent and I’m not replacing another door. I’m just saving enough to move out, but even then I know I can’t let him know where I live which means no one else in my family can know where I live because the two times we didn’t live together, he would still come over, with another family member who didn’t understand or know the extent of the issue and I’m back at square one again.

The worst part of this is that I still love him and don’t want anything bad to happen to him, but at the same time I’ve thought about how life would be better without him, and then I’m the bad person for feeling this way.

I know breaking generational curses aren’t easy, but when the only solution seems to be abandoning my family entirely, I feel hopeless.

I shouldn’t be surprised

I can’t be the only person that right as a holiday or a vacation is coming up, I get bombarded with last minute tasks that weren’t urgent until the day before.

I’m going through all my emails and trying to get ahead the entire week. Im aware of this extend weekend and planned my week from the beginning but, I am now receiving an email the day before break of 5 to 6 tasks that need to be done urgently.

You’ve known about these assignments so far in advance that some of these assignments I created shells for your several months ago. Why is it always urgent right before a break, you ignored me most of the week, why is this my problem at the end of the day?! (When I say you, I mean my attorney)

Being overwhelmed by my task list

You know what’s super annoying is having a ton of tasks/assignments with various levels of urgency.
Falling behind but, finally getting to a point where you have it together and starting easy tasks that shouldn’t have been put off for as long as it was, because the first time in forever I don’t have an attorney in my ear trying to prioritize mundane administrative tasks like renaming files.

Signed a Paralegal who was finally able to submit medical records requests that she couldn’t get to because every time she’d open a medical records chart, the whole firm some how caught on fire, trial was in two hours, and we need to file 6 motions today . (Exaggerating and obvious sarcasm, unless you talk to the attorney that leaves everything for the last second)

Catching up?!

I’m behind on a lot of tasks and ultimately the biggest underlying issue is lack of help and being understaffed.
The issue is I don’t know of a law firm that doesn’t have a staffing issue, so how are you supposed to be caught up?

I currently have 340 emails that need to be addressed.
100 court filings that need to be saved to the file and or calendared.
At least 20 files that need medical records requests processed.
Demands that need to be sent
Rogs that need to be answered
Trial binders that need to be prepared.
Invoices that need to be processed.
Files that need to be final billed.
And including admin responsibilities like creating shells for each new case.

Keep in mind I’ve been at this firm for about a year and I inherited a work load of 8,000 unread emails. So technically yes I am catching up but every time it feels close to feeling manageable, more is added to the pile.

Is being caught up ultimately just a myth when you’re a paralegal?

Ecourts Notices

I am currently the only Paralegal in my office and I’m definitely burned out, but the task that really is burning me out is saving all court notices and saving filings into the files, which feels really stupid to say but this task can literally take all day especially if it’s a busy filling day.

Keep in mind I am responsible for 6 attorney accounts.

I still have to do other paralegal work like request records and open files on occasion. I’ve taken a few days off but ultimately I know if something doesn’t fundamentally change in this office, I’m going to continue to burn out.
