In his poem, “The Barren Moors,” William Ellery Channing utilizes simile and personification to highlight both the solitude and the moral fulfillment and tranquility the speaker feels in the barren moors, ultimately moving the audience to reflect on the contrast between nature's “two silent floors” and the rush of the modern world.

Channing utilizes several literary elements, including simile and personification, to highlight the speaker’s moral tranquility in the open expanses of wild, uncultivated land. Cunning utilizes simile throughout his poem, but most importantly, he uses it at line nine to highlight the speaker’s internal state and focus in a largely consumeristic and dynamic world. Writing “Like desert Islands far at sea / where not a ship can ever land, / Those dim uncertainties for me / For something veritable stand.” Channing compares the barren moors of vast open land to deserted Islands far at sea, free from the modern world that can largely consist of lies, corruption, and moral exhaustion. In comparison, the dim uncertainties and debates of life that accompany modern society no longer accompany the speaker in the vast open lands of the moors. The barren moors symbolize an authentic force, something the speaker can utilize to purify his mind away from the rush of society. Also in this way, Channing is directly contrasting those modern uncertainties with the peaceful, pastoral landscape that is the very essence of the moors. Similarly, further in the poem, the speaker utilizes personification to develop this comparison, writing: “A serious distinct place from all / Which busy Life delight to feel / I stand in this deserted hall / And thus the wounds of time conceal.” Channing personifies Life as a living force who is actually delighted to experience the solace of the moors and its way of enabling moral reconciliation and rootedness through the peace and tranquility that it offers. Channing additionally utilizes the adjective “busy” to again demonstrate the rush of the modern world and how the moors offer so much to combat the stress that may accompany it. Moreover, this claim is further qualified by line 16, which suggests that in this pastoral and peaceful landscape, the wounds that have disrupted life or have enabled some kind of anxiety or despair can fully heal in the solace of the moors and the moral tranquility that it brings.

Channing utilizes simile and personification in his poem to highlight the pastoral solitude and the moral reconciliation and tranquility the speaker feels across the vacant moors. Channing repeatedly uses these literary devices to contrast the experience of life “between two silent floors” and busy life away from the “desert Islands at sea”, full of corruption and exhaustion. The author emphasizes that despite there being many uncertainties and stresses in life, particularly in the moors, for example, some veritable truth stands, and the profound forces of authenticity begin to develop the character.
