Frustrated at Grading Scale

I am feeling frustrated towards the Lakehead U grading scale for the B.Ed. program.

What's the point of trying to complete Level 4 work if I'm going to be graded between 70-75%? Additionally, not knowing if this is common practice or just Lakehead is frustrating. If it's across the board, then maybe I would feel less frustrated, but since I don't know, it's even more frustrating.

Just wanted to vent lol.

Failed Math Competency Test (1st Attempt)

I am a first year B. Ed. student in the P/J track and I failed (spectacularly, mind you, might as well not been there) the math competency exam. I have been enrolled in the math course but I'm having doubts that I should even teach at all. I'm so worried I'll be the first student to not pass by attempt 4. Please tell me that won't happen lol.

What are some study materials you used? How did you pass, if you've taken it? Just looking to improve my chances for next time.

OSAP Funding Not Enough

I don’t know what to do.

I am a mature student, returning to school full-time in September for the Lakehead University bachelors of education program in Orillia. I will not be working full-time during school and will only be working part-time. My husband will continue working full-time, he makes about $52,000 a year.

My OSAP was calculated and it was $10,350. No grants were listed. This is not even enough for tuition.

I have already reached out to the financial aid office but I’m at a loss. I don’t know what to do. I had put off going back to school for education because I wasn’t sure I could afford it, but was encouraged to move forward anyways. Now I feel like my dream is right at my fingertips but that it isn’t enough.

What should I do? I’m waiting to hear back from my financial aid office.

Edit: Okay, I have calmed down. I redid the calculation and it came to $8,180.28 for tuition, fees and books. It’s enough to cover that, leaving $2,169.72. As mentioned, I will be working part time so I’ll take as many hours as possible throughout the school year.

Edit 2: Thank you to everyone for the suggestions and other words of encouragement. I will be exploring additional avenues for funding as I wait to hear back from financial aid for additional sources for financing. Thanks again!

Math Competency Test (P/J - Orillia)

Hello,

I am starting Year One of the Bachelor’s of Education program for the P/J track in September as a mature student. Math has never been my strong suit. I met expectations in school and the lowest grade I ever had in math was a C.

But this test has me feeling anxious and worried. We only get 4 chances to pass. Has anyone taken it? If so, what was your experience like?

I have begun studying by reviewing the practice questions, using Khan Academy, and I even purchased coursework books for K-6th grade to practice some problems in there. Am I making this harder in my head?

Any tips, tricks, or study materials would be appreciated!

Thank you.
