Taking pictures of Hakata Gion Yamakasa Festival
I just picked up a new lens and want to capture some cool shots of the Hakata Gion Yamakasa this year. Been living in Fukuoka for about 2 years, but I’ve never really experienced the festival beyond seeing a few floats around town. This year I want to do it properly.
I’ve put together a rough plan based on info from Fukuoka Now, but I’d love some advice from people who’ve been before.
Current plan 😂
July 10
Cycle around the city and photograph the decorated floats. (I’ll have to research where they are specifically)
July 11 (5:00/6:00 AM)
Catch one of the early morning practice runs.
Not sure which team or where would be the best place to watch and photograph.
July 13 (from 3:30 PM)
Planning to watch from around the Gofukumachi intersection where the first float departs.
July 15 (3:30AM)
Cycle to Kushida Jinja around 3:30 AM, find a spot, and wait for the 4:59 AM start. The Oiyama!
Does this sound like a good plan? Or am I crazy? Any recommendations on better locations, hidden gems, or tips in general?
I’d especially appreciate advice on where to position myself for action shots versus wider festival atmosphere.
Thanks in advance!
