What the hell is going on with SVCE hostels?

Honestly, I'm getting really pissed off with the state of the hostel.

And no, I'm not expecting a fucking 5-star hotel. I'm expecting basic facilities that actually work.

The amount of money and resources going into the institution, and THIS is what hostel students have to deal with?

FOOD

The hostel food is ridiculously spicy and loaded with masala. Not occasionally. It's just unnecessarily heavy.

And here's the best part — outside food is treated like we're trying to smuggle contraband into campus.

Fine. Security. I get it.

BUT THEN GIVE US AN ALTERNATIVE.

The canteen closes around 3:15 PM on working days.

OAT Chillout closes around 5 PM.

The new shop near OAT closes around 6 PM.

After that?

Hostel food.

Saturday and Sunday?

Hostel food.

Blinkit/Zepto etc. aren't available because of the location.

Swiggy/Zomato outside food isn't allowed inside campus.

BigBasket apparently used to be available but isn't anymore.

So if you're going to restrict outside food this aggressively, WHY ARE THERE NO PROPER LATE-NIGHT FOOD OPTIONS FOR HOSTEL STUDENTS?

We're not asking for a fucking McDonald's. Keep one decent food outlet open.

ONE VENDING MACHINE FOR 1500+ BOYS

The boys' hostel has 1500+ students and there's basically one vending machine.

The cooling doesn't work properly.

And the machine itself barely works because of network issues.

From my experience, it's functional maybe 15% of the time.

1500+ students.

ONE MACHINE.

And that one machine doesn't even reliably work.

What is this?

THE HOSTEL WI-FI IS ANOTHER LEVEL

The Wi-Fi is so heavily restricted that you genuinely start wondering who designed the filtering policy.

Netflix works.

But YouTube and AI tools like ChatGPT and Claude can be restricted.

I'm sorry, but what the actual fuck is the logic?

We're engineering students.

YouTube is literally one of the biggest sources of lectures, programming tutorials, technical explanations and project help.

ChatGPT/Claude are being used for coding, debugging, documentation, learning and research.

But Netflix is apparently acceptable?

Netflix: ✅

YouTube: ❌

ChatGPT: ❌

Claude: ❌

If this is about bandwidth, why is Netflix allowed?

If this is about productivity, why is Netflix allowed?

If this is about security, then explain the actual security concern.

Because from a student's perspective, it looks completely backwards.

An engineering college restricting engineering students from modern technical tools while allowing Netflix is embarrassing.

At least have a proper whitelist/request system.

HOSTEL INFRASTRUCTURE

Lockers are inadequate.

Plug points are ancient.

And these aren't "luxury" complaints.

Students have laptops, phones, tablets, chargers, etc. We need functional electrical infrastructure and proper storage.

THE WASH BASIN MESS

This deserves its own section.

The wash basin area is just a fucking mess.

The arrangement itself is bizarre - multiple wash basins interconnected in the same setup, and the whole thing ends up looking and feeling unhygienic.

How did something this basic become such a mess?

THE "SMART" E-PASS

Then there's the new e-pass system.

RT calls parents manually.

Student gets approval.

Then signs at the main gate.

Then signs AGAIN at the hostel gate.

So what exactly is smart about this?

If we're still doing manual calls and physical signing at two locations, you've basically removed the physical pass and called it digitisation.

AND DON'T EVEN GET ME STARTED ON PARCELS

Even receiving a fucking parcel becomes an operation.

Security intervenes at the main gate.

Delivery guys get questioned.

Then students have to walk 1 km+ from the hostel to the main gate just to deal with a delivery.

Imagine walking more than a kilometre because you ordered a fucking charger.

Delivery guy comes → security issue → student walks 1+ km → sorts it out → walks back.

FOR A PARCEL.

Security is necessary.

Making students and delivery workers suffer because the system can't handle routine deliveries isn't.

Have a parcel collection point.

Have a controlled delivery zone.

Use student ID verification.

Use QR codes.

There are literally hundreds of ways to solve this.

And when you put everything together, it's fucking exhausting.

Bad food.

Outside food restricted.

Campus food closes early.

No proper alternative.

One unreliable vending machine for 1500+ students.

Ancient plug points.

Poor storage.

A wash basin area that's a complete mess.

Overly restrictive Wi-Fi.

Netflix works while YouTube/AI tools can be restricted.

A "smart" e-pass that still involves manual calls and two signatures.

A 1+ km walk to receive a parcel.

And we're supposed to just accept all of this because "it's hostel"?

No.

We're students, not inmates.

Security can exist without making everything unnecessarily inconvenient.

Technology can exist without being half-assed.

And if you're going to restrict something, provide an actual alternative.

The frustrating part is that none of these problems individually are impossible to fix.

They're just basic problems that apparently nobody wants to properly solve.

SVCE seriously needs to look at the hostel experience from the student's side for once.

And the Student Council, do you guys do anything besides Calibrations and Highways?

Because when it comes to events: full power.

Hostel food, Wi-Fi, infrastructure, e-pass, basic student issues: absolute silence.

You have the position and the access. Use it.

Stop acting like you're an event committee with a fancy title.

Do something for students for once.

Should I buy this PC for ₹85k? First PC Purchase Advice Needed

Hey everyone,

I found a used/custom PC setup for around ₹85,000 and got all the original invoices from 2023. This would actually be my first ever PC, so I really want to make a smart decision and avoid overpaying or buying something outdated/unbalanced.

Specs

CPU: Intel i9-13900K

Motherboard: ASUS B760M WiFi DDR5

GPU: Zotac GTX 1650 4GB

RAM: Corsair 16GB DDR5 5600MHz

SSD: Samsung 970 EVO NVMe SSD

HDD: Seagate 2TB HDD

Cooler: Cooler Master 240L V2 AIO

PSU: Cooler Master 650W SMPS

Cabinet: Ant Esports cabinet

Monitor: Dell 27” monitor

Extras: UPS + Logitech wireless keyboard/mouse included

Original Bill Prices

From the invoices:

i9-13900K alone was around ₹53k

Remaining tower parts were around ₹62k

Monitor was around ₹14k

Cooler separately around ₹6.8k

So the total original cost seems to have been well above ₹1.3L+.

My Use Case

- Gaming

- Programming/development

- Content creation & video editing

- Maybe streaming later

- General long-term upgradeable setup

My Main Concern

The CPU is extremely powerful, but the GPU is only a GTX 1650, which makes the build feel very unbalanced.

I do plan on upgrading the GPU later to something like an RTX 5070, but probably not immediately.

So I wanted to ask:

- Is ₹85k a fair price for this setup in 2026?

- Is the GTX 1650 too weak for this build?

- Will the i9-13900K run too hot or consume too much power?

- Can I comfortably use the 1650 for a while and upgrade later?

- Or should I skip this entirely and build a newer balanced Ryzen setup instead?

Since this is my first PC, I’d really appreciate honest opinions from people who know the used PC market and hardware well.
