An American music producer who worked on a BTS song years ago mentioned that he received information from an internal source at the Grammy Awards indicating that the plan was to use BTS group as a way to sell everyone on the Best Asian Pop Music Performance category.

That awarding the prize to them would lend legitimacy and make it seem like a win-win for both sides, thinking the whole time the group would be eager for this accolade. They could then use that to lure in other artists, thinking they'd want the same prestige, and maybe expand on it with other focused categories.

All that says to me is the RA thought if they could get everyone on board with that category, they could then keep them out of the main categories, while still trying to seem inclusive.

What they did not anticipate was that BTS would stick to their art and principles, and would not pursue recognition by the Grammys at any costs.

EDIT: One more thing, according to CNN, a song is allowed only one entry in a performance category. So if it goes into Asian Pop, it can't go in Group/Duo or Solo Pop. And the RA can just shift nominations where they please, regardless of what it was submitted for.
