Chronic insomniac here

I’ve always been bad at sleeping but for the past few years it always takes me more than 3-4 hours to fall asleep even when I’m in bed with my eyes closed and relaxed, usually can’t fall asleep until 6am and then I wake up extremely tired almost every day. I don’t have sleep apnea and I’m not on and rec or prescribed drugs, I believe it’s starting to limit my ability to be a normal person, I am also depressed but I think it’s from the sleep issues, I just have no idea how to fix it and I’ve tried everything besides sleep medication but I’d rather not start that because I’ve heard it can be dangerous. Any suggestions?
