State says there's money, bank says none

Hi, I'm in CA and on the board of an HOA. Several years ago the association switched management companies and banks. We thought everything was transferred over but last month we find out that on the state controller's unclaimed property site our association is owed a large four-figure sum in the form of "cashier's checks" from that old bank. I assume this was money left in one of the accounts and forgotten, then the bank shipped it off to the state.

The problem is that we have no paperwork/statements from the old bank, and I contacted them and they said they found the three accounts we had, and two were closed with cashier's checks (sent to the new bank) that had been cashed and one was closed with a zero balance.

Yet, the state says the old bank gave them this four-figure check in our name. Will the state give me a copy of the check that I can show the bank? Any other ideas?
