Catalogue Costumes pre-Covid

Who has used catalogues for recital costumes before Covid? I took a few years off from teaching due to COVID, having kids, and moving. I remember beautiful ballet/lyrical costumes made from chiffon and crepe being the norm. Now 99% of the dresses are spandex or “power mesh”. What happened?! Do these materials flow and twirl as nicely as chiffon? I have been avoiding them the past few years by sticking to tulle costumes, but I need to change it up this year. Maybe I’m just a curmudgeonly old ballet teacher now… but back in my day we wore chiffon!

Resources on Male Ballet Steps/Instruction?

I am looking for recommendations on resources for male ballet instruction (books, videos, websites, social media, whatever). I have a teenage male student for the first time in an intermediate/advanced level ballet class and I want to be sure I am not neglecting traditional male steps/artistry. Note: it is not a partnering class and I don’t plan to cover partnering but I am still interested in resources for that as well.

Recommended Ballet Performance Videos

I have some teenage students who have minimal ballet training. I want to recommend some videos of iconic/inspiring performances to them. What are your favorites? Links would be helpful.

Stage Lighting Advice for Ballet Performance

Hello! I am looking for some advice on stage lighting for a short ballet piece. I want simple lighting so that the dancing is the main feature, but I do need some help illuminating the costume properly. You can see a video clip of the costume in motion here: https://www.revolutiondance.com/almost-midnight/ The skirt has layers of tulle, mint underneath navy. As you can see in the photos, the skirt looks more dull/dark in person. I’m hoping to use lighting to draw out the beautiful mint color underneath. I was overwhelmed reading about color theory in lighting, so I thought I’d inquire here.

The dance is inspired by Monet’s Water Lilies paintings, so I would like to use colors for the cyc curtain to reference those paintings as well. I am more interested in using stage lighting and the dancers’ bodies to invoke the Impressionistic style of the paintings themselves than of creating a watery scene. I’m thinking of the dance more as a moving painting itself as opposed to an actual pond with flowers in it. Thanks in advance!

EDIT: For clarification I am the choreographer and I know very little about stage lighting. I would just talk with the tech crew at the theater but that’s not how my studio runs tech rehearsals for their shows. I have to submit in writing what I want for lighting for my dance. The stage manager will pre-set the lighting with the tech crew without either of them having seen the dance. So I’d like to have specific requests that I can trust will look effective in advance. I would defer to the tech crew’s judgement, but I have to at least give an idea of what I want in general (colors for cyc, side lighting, top or front lights, effects). Thanks!

Help teaching students to hear the music

I teach ballet at a competition dance studio, where ballet is not the focus. Very few of these students have ever performed choreography to classical music. I have chosen a relatively simple piece of music to count (Fauré’s Sicilienne), but even the students who know the choreography don’t seem to be listening to the music or dancing to the music. I want to try some things this week to help them connect more with this beautiful piece, so they have more graceful flow as opposed to robotically hitting the steps… and I’m just looking for as many ideas as I can find. TIA.
