World Rocked by 4 Powerful Earthquakes in three continents within 8-12 Hours. Were They Connected?
On June 24th, 2026, four earthquakes struck three continents within 12 hours — Venezuela, Japan, and California. Venezuela's most powerful quake in over a century. Are these related? How rare is this occurrence?
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed that major earthquakes in California, Venezuela, and Japan occurring within about 12 hours were not connected, as they struck separate fault systems on different tectonic plate boundaries. In California, a 5.6-magnitude quake caused minor damage and outages; Venezuela was hit by a rare 7.2/7.5 doublet, resulting in over 160 deaths and widespread destruction; and a 6.9-magnitude offshore quake near Japan caused strong shaking but no major damage. Although four significant earthquakes in such a short period is exceptionally rare, scientists say it was a statistical coincidence, with no mechanism linking stress across these distant tectonic regions: https://gizmodo.com/world-rocked-by-4-powerful-earthquakes-in-less-than-8-hours-were-they-connected-2000777615
