Building Coffee Tampers that spark joy!

I am an Ex-Apple and Google Product Designer on a mission to bring bold beautiful design DNA to coffee accessories. Right now I'm focussing in on the tamper and I think its a cool opportunity to have some fun.

After sketching out a number of different form factors, and 3D printing a lot of shapes, I am converging on something that feels great in the hand as well as challenges the status quo and stands out.

I am considering 2 different skus: one with calibrated springs for you coffee wizards out there and one simpler sku with no spring for you every day latte lovers.

Would love to know your thoughts! Do you like the bold form factor? Have any concerns or suggestions? What colours would you want to see in your kitchen?

Note: The colours on these prints are just for demonstration only (I have quite limited choice of print filament) - and bottom part is missing on the coloured picture - WORK IN PROGRESS YALL :)

I’m exploring the idea of building a coffee accessories brand focused on bold design, fun colourways, and products that genuinely bring a little joy to people’s morning routines.

After looking at the current market, I decided to start with the tamper. A lot of the existing options feel very functional-first — mostly black, stainless steel, and fairly similar in form. It feels like there’s room to do something more expressive while still being ergonomic and high quality.

A friend and I have started sketching concepts, and this is where we’re at so far. I’m drawn to forms that feel a bit more substantial in the hand — both to improve ergonomics and to stand apart from the typical tamper shapes currently on the market.

Still very early days, and I don’t think we’ve fully nailed it yet, but I’d genuinely love feedback from this community.

  • Do you think there’s room in the market for a more bold / design-led tamper?
  • Which direction would you explore further?
  • Anything you’d want to see that current tampers are missing?

Appreciate any thoughts — positive or critical ☕

I'm a product designer and late blooming coffee fanatic. I only started drinking coffee in my mid (ok late) 30s, by which time I had gained experience developing beautiful products at Apple and Google.

I was struck by the lack of “design” available for coffee accessories. A lot of great functional products - no shortage of highly engineered Tamper/AutoComb/Baskets/[other] out there. And that’s great - choice is amazing.

But as a designer I see my job in large part to create joy! Beyond just function (level 1 design), comes the use of form, colour, material, texture to make the user feel something. Not in a pretentious way - just a connection that makes people smile internally (better still externally).

People's kitchens are so unique and beautiful; the heart of every home. So surely the coffee station should receive a sprinkle of love.

So… I am going to see what I can come up with.

But I need your help - I confess I’m not the most experienced of coffee nerd. And the experience on r/espresso is nothing short of amazing. So I plan on posting my progress, ideas, questions, polls here to help guide this journey and the products.

Thank you in advance for any input you share (Positive and (I hope constructive) criticism).

Cheers
