Does anyone actually verify restaurant charges after they post?

This happened to me recently and made me realize I don’t really have a good system.

At a lot of restaurants, the pending charge isn’t the final amount. A day or two later, it updates after the tip is added.

The problem is… by then I’ve usually thrown away the receipt.

If the posted amount ended up being a few dollars higher than I intended, I’m not sure I’d even notice unless it was something obvious.

So now I’m curious what everyone else does.

  • Do you keep the paper receipt until the charge posts?
  • Take a photo of every receipt?
  • Compare it against your credit card statement?
  • Or do you just trust that it’s correct?

I’ve seen stories about accidental double tipping, automatic gratuity, service charges, and even the occasional tip adjustment. I know those aren’t common, but it made me wonder if I’m the weird one for wanting to verify the final amount.

What’s your routine?

How to tip smartly at restaurants?

Hey everyone, I’m working on TipOtter, a small iOS app for restaurant bills.

The idea came from a tiny annoyance I kept running into after eating out. A lot of restaurants charge the meal first, then update the charge later after the tip gets added. By the time it shows up on my card, I usually don’t remember the exact total anymore.

I’m not saying restaurants are changing tips all the time. I just don’t like having to trust my memory for every coffee, lunch, dinner, or work meal.

TipOtter lets you scan a receipt or type in the subtotal and tax, pick a normal tip like 15%, 18%, or 20%, and see the final total before you pay.

The main thing I wanted to test is Smart mode. It keeps the tip close to the percentage you picked, but nudges it by a few cents so the final total has a simple pattern.

For example, if the total is $85.49:

8 + 5 = 4 + 9

That makes it easier for me to look at my bank statement later and go, “Yep, that was the one.”

A few details:

• App Store: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/tipotter-tip-calculator/id
• Privacy: no account required; bill history and receipt photos stay on your device

I’d love feedback on three things:

• Does Smart mode make sense when explained this way?
• Does the app feel useful enough for people who eat out, travel, or save receipts?

If you’re willing to try it and send me real feedback, DM me. I have a few lifetime access promo codes I can share. No App Store review required, just tell me what feels useful, confusing, or annoying.

If the app genuinely helps you, an honest App Store review would also mean a lot.

I made an iOS app [TipOtter] because I got tired of double-checking restaurant tips later

  • Is the $9.99 lifetime price reasonable for this kind of utility?

Built TipOtter because I got tired of double-checking restaurant tips later

Disclosure: I’m the developer of TipOtter.

TipOtter is an iOS app tip calculator for restaurant bills. It can scan a receipt or let you type in the subtotal and tax, choose a tip like 15%, 18%, or 20%, and show the final total before you pay.

One thing it handles is the way restaurant card charges often work: the meal amount may show first, then the final charge updates later after the tip is added. TipOtter saves the bill details and receipt photo, so the final charge is easier to check later.

It also has Smart mode. Smart mode keeps the tip close to the percentage you picked, but nudges it by a few cents so the final total has a simple pattern.

For example, if the total is $85.49:

8 + 5 = 4 + 9

That makes the charge easier to recognize later without digging through every receipt.

A few details:

  • Name: TipOtter
  • Description: receipt scanner and tip calculator with Standard and Smart tip modes
  • App Store: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/tipotter-tip-calculator/id6780353727
  • Trial: 7 days free
  • Lifetime Access: $9.99 one-time purchase, no subscription
  • Privacy: no account required; bill history and receipt photos stay on your device

Useful for eating out, work meals, travel, saved receipts, or anyone who wants a clearer final total at the table.
