success story

Never enough success stories so wanted to come on here and share mine (& give some of you hope in doing so).

November 2025 I started having UTI symptoms, pretty shortly after having had sex for the first time with my bf. I should note that I never had any UTIs or yeast infections or anything of the sort prior to this, so some nerves were wracked, to say the least.

Main symptom was the standard burning while peeing, specifically toward the end. The first time around symptoms were pretty mild, initially I thought it was just dehydration, but when symptoms went on for a week or so, bf and I finally went to urgent care. Got some testing done, was told it was a standard UTI and prescribed Nitrofurantoin macrobid. Took that for 5 days or so, seemingly felt better.

Then the next month, around the same time (circa ovulation), symptoms came back, except significantly more aggressive. Woke up early, sweating, couldn’t lay down or sit still it was so uncomfortable, burning while peeing, pelvic discomfort. The evening prior, sex was painful as well. This time, bf and I decided instead of going to urgent care again we’d just order the Nitrofurantoin home to avoid the hassle. Took the meds, and again, seemingly felt fine for a bit. Azo urinary pain relief was also a serious life saver for peak symptoms.

Now again, because we were told it was just a standard UTI, we were taking wayy extra precaution w/ hygiene. Although again, I’ve never had any issues like this before, so I began to suspect it must be something else.

So when the aggressive symptoms came back a third time around in March (this time with hip pain??), I knew I had to take this into my own hands and do some proper research. Thanks to Reddit shadow medicine (God bless), I came across ureaplasma and ask my primary care dr to get tested. Result came back positive for ureaplasma urealyticum. Both my bf and I had it, but he was asymptomatic.

And before taking any antibiotics, I do a TON of research and ultimately decide to follow the European standard protocol, which seemed to be most effective from everything I’ve read. That’s 2 weeks doxycycline, 5 days azithromycin, for both partners.

My primary dr initially tried to prescribe me cipro (which I said no to as that’s a last resort antibiotic that can result in some serious side effects) and then tried to prescribe me 7 days of doxycycline, which I knew wouldn’t be enough on its own.

I then went to go see a urologist, who prescribed both my bf and I the exact course I requested (14 day doxy 5 day azithro) and that’s what we ended up taking, at the same time. The course did feel like forever, but thankfully neither of us had any crazy bad side effects, except for my bf having diarrhea the last few days on doxy. I did have some ongoing symptoms while I was taking the course, though. Oh, also we were not having sex during the course, and I was taking women’s health probiotics as a yeast infection preventative (long courses can do that).

We finished the course mid April, and since then, I’ve been doing great besides some occasional super mild lingering symptoms like discharge and it taking a second to pee sometimes. Besides the psychological damage, the extensive antibiotics having made my fungal bacne rebound (a month and a half or so of using nizoral dandruff shampoo w/ ketoconazole as a bodywash has made it mostly go away), and having broke up with said bf (for unrelated reasons lol), all is good now.

If there’s any advice I can give you, it’s to PLEASE ADVOCATE FOR YOURSELF. A lot of these doctors, especially primary care doctors / urgent care doctors, are not specialized enough to properly treat ureaplasma. Trust your instinct, and do what you have to do for your health.

From everything I’ve read, a single course of 7 day doxy is unlikely to eradicate the infection, and you’d rather avoid taking extra rounds of antibiotics if you don’t have to. I personally have 0 regrets having followed the european standard protocol, although I live in the US. And PLEASE treat your partner with the same course, even if they are asymptomatic.

Lastly, girls please just be safe with these guys. Before you, *these mfs* are God knows where doing God knows what with God knows who. And because a lot of guys are asymptomatic, they don’t even know they’re spreading ureaplasma everywhere. And it’s not well-known about enough! Makes me sickkkk to think about.

But yes anyways that’s my success story, hopefully at least one person feels better after reading this.
