Captain Nixon loses his house and his dog when his wife files for divorce. How realistic was that under the divorce laws of 1945?

Superstore is one of my favorite TV series but quite often I can not assess how realistic or exaggerated the horrible working conditions are that we see in the show. Like Amy has to work two days after giving birth? Is this really possible?
