New Character!

New Character!

Another Oddworld character made by me.

Anyway, this is Big Rock, and he’s a notorious killer feared throughout the continent of Mudos. He belongs to the Outlaw social class, but he went further than his peers, climbing the ranks of Mudos’ mafia. It is said that he only assassinates certain CEOs of major industries (according to his code of honor, industrialists are meant to be eliminated), and in response, the industrialists (who have always been allied with Oddworld’s mafia) couldn’t accept the betrayal and decided to do everything in their power to capture him.

I realize he might seem a little too human for Oddworld standards lol (similar to the criticism received by the Fangus Klot characters from LL). But that’s because you haven’t seen him with his strangely enormous hands yet (his arms were cut off by the authorities after he was captured. It was meant as a warning, since he was also a thief in addition to being a killer).

Every big shot in Oddworld’s underworld has a bust of his physique as a memorial to their favorite leader!

(Oh, he wears a blindfold over his eyes because, by his own choice, he wants to be represented that way... I wonder why.)

A second quintology?

I was listening to the various interviews and a question came to mind: What comes next?

We don’t know what stage the new quintology is at (many of you understandably even think it won’t be completed at all, although I’m still confident that it will), but let’s assume for a moment that it does get completed.

Once Abe’s story is finally and definitively over, what do you think will come next? A new series with new characters? A spin-off? What will OWI keep itself busy with? Or rather, what would you like to see continue?

From a strategic point of view, I’d suggest continuing with games, as well as perhaps a comic book series, without ruling either option out. I think the best thing they could do once the new quintology is finished, and therefore the story they originally wanted to tell for Abe is complete, would be to continue exploring other parts of Oddworld and other characters in order to expand the universe.

Something similar has been done with Star Wars. The main story told across the nine movies is complete, but there are plenty of other series and projects that explore different stories within that universe.

I’m curious to hear your opinions, including those of the active OWI members on this subreddit, although I realize they probably won’t be able to reveal much about future projects lol.

The Comedian

Lately, I've been spending a lot of time looking through the concept art of Oddworld's discarded character designs. I found it fascinating that many of them filled recognizable roles within society; priests, court jesters, lawyers, and so on.

That inspired me to create a character in the same spirit.

The Comedian is, for all intents and purposes, a stand-up comedian working for the Magog Cartel. I envisioned him as a potential boss for a hypothetical game.

His apparent role is to entertain Khanzumers and the rest of society through television shows and comedy routines. The catch is that his jokes are completely offensive and in poor taste, targeting the native species and slaves. In reality, his performances serve as propaganda for the Magog Cartel.

The fact that he's naked symbolizes his willingness to make a fool of himself just to entertain people or attract an audience. His unusually long tongue represents his constant, unfiltered talking. He has two smaller eyes positioned on top of his larger ones, symbolizing that beneath his seemingly innocent appearance lies a cruel and malicious nature. He wears a hat that imitates Abe's stitched lips, and on top of it there's a small opening through which you can see the eyes of a tiny creature, implying that it's the little being whispering jokes into his ear.

How could he work as a boss? One idea I really liked was having Abe possess him in something like Munch's Oddysee (I mention that game because it had the largest amount of cut content). Abe could take control of The Comedian and force him to tell jokes against the Magog Cartel, causing the industrialists to turn on him and literally tear him apart.

Oddworld Proposes! #4

There isn't much to say about this topic.

I think adding more vehicles and usable means of transportation for Abe would make the gameplay feel more dynamic. Just think about Elum in Abe's Oddysee/New 'n' Tasty or the Mine Cart in Abe's Exoddus.

There are plenty of ideas, and I've come up with a few vehicle concepts, such as Slig-controlled tanks, Walkers, and rideable creatures.

Even a level centered around an Elum racing sequence would be a great idea.

As always, let me know what you think. (More dynamic gameplay, greater gameplay variety, and more fun throughout the game.)

Oddworld Proposes #3

Another improvement proposal I have is the return of quicksave. Many players found Soulstorm challenging due to the lack of a quicksave feature, but since the game was designed around that limitation, adding it back could make it too easy.

That's why I proposed a compromise: Limited Quicksave.

This would improve:

- The strategic depth and challenge of each level

- Reduce frustration in certain sections

- Make the gameplay feel more dynamic

All the details are explained in the post above. As always, the discussion is open, and since this is only a proposal, it can and should be refined with your suggestions and feedback.

Let me know what you think!

Oddworld Proposes #2

Second proposal post with gameplay ideas this one is definitely a bit more controversial.

Taking advantage of Lorne's interest in experimentation, including with online features, I think an additional multiplayer content pack (DLC) could be a great idea.

--------- Structure: -----------

Maximum of 3 players (playing as Mudokons)

Example objectives:

Destroy the generator

Pull all the levers

Eliminate all Slig sentries

Camera system: Each player has their own camera, with on-screen indicators showing the positions of the other players on the map.

Online only, no local co-op. A shared-screen setup could become frustrating and cluttered.

ADVANTAGES:

Community growth

Increased replayability (it can be played over and over with friends)

Opportunity to introduce Oddworld to new players.

Oddworld Proposes #1

I know very well that not everyone will agree with this topic. I made this post as the beginning of a series of proposals, also to see the fans' reaction (I shared it on the Instagram page as well).

A comic book set in Oddworld... Why make one?

In addition to the reasons already mentioned in the post, it's worth noting that fans are concerned about the future of the series after Soulstorm (and it pains me to say it) was not received as positively as its predecessors by a portion of the audience. Illustrated books could be an EXCELLENT alternative for continuing certain stories that might not work as well in video game form.

This does not mean that OWI should abandon the gaming world, but rather EXPAND it. Oddworld has immense potential. For example, with the Star Wars franchise, we have received films, TV series, animated series, and even comic books. Oddworld has the potential to tell stories through comics and illustrated books thanks to the team's incredible talent in graphics and artwork.

It could even help boost sales in a different way before returning to work on video game projects for the most important parts of the Quintology, such as the conclusion of Abe's story, Munch's story, a brand-new standalone chapter, or something else entirely.

In short, illustrated books are, in my opinion, an excellent alternative for:

The development team

The series

And the community.
